Waiting on Wednesday (23)

Welcome to Waiting on Wednesday! Waiting on Wednesday is a weekly event that is hosted by Jill at Breaking the Spine and spotlights upcoming releases we are eagerly anticipating. This week I am anxiously awaiting:

Dead is a Battlefield by Marlene Perez
Publicaton Date: March 6, 2012
Genre: YA Fantasy
Pages: 240

Summary

Jessica Walsh is starting her freshman year at Nightshade High and trying to forget about the tragic events surrounding her brother’s graduation. She wants to have a normal high school experience. But that’s easier said than done in Nightshade.

When a new boy shows up at school, the girls are infected with a case of seriously creepy crushes. But when their obsession turns to violence, Jessica and her friends start to wonder if there’s more going on than just a little friendly rivalry. Are the smitten girls turning into love zombies?

And Jessica has other worries—like her crush on Dominic Gray, the cute but moody new singer for Side Effects May Vary, and the mysterious tattoo that appeared on her arm one day and lets her know whenever there is trouble brewing. Jessica learns she's a Virago, a woman warrior chosen to fight evil whenever it threatens her hometown. But does a lowly freshman really have what it takes to keep Nightshade safe?

This is a spin off of her current series Dead is....I've only read one book of her's which was Dead Is the New Black. And, it was okay. One day I'll have to pick up the second in the series and give it a go, Dead IS a State of Mind.

It definitly was a fast read and interesting. I probably didn't get hooked into it that much because I read some stupid comment about how it was just trying to be like twilight or trying to go off the hype. But looking at that now anything that delt with Vampires and Werewovles people were no doubt going to compare the two, even if they're nothing a like. So I'll have to pick the series up again.

Anyways, this spin off sounds fun and a new theme to add to my ever growing paranormal pile of books. Can't wait and I just love the cover. :)

Infamous by Sherrilyn Kenyon
Publication Date: Marcch 13, 2012
Genre: YA  Fantasy
Pages: 432

Infamous (Chronicles of Nick, #3)

Summary

Go to school. Get good grades. Stay out of trouble. That’s the mandate for most kids. But Nick Gautier isn’t the average teenager. He’s a boy with a destiny not even he fully understands. And his first mandate is to stay alive while everyone, even his own father, tries to kill him.

He’s learned to annihilate zombies and raise the dead, divination and clairvoyance, so why is learning to drive such a difficulty? But that isn’t the primary skill he has to master. Survival is.

And in order to survive, his next lesson makes all the others pale in comparison. He is on the brink of becoming either the greatest hero mankind has ever known.

Or he’ll be the one who ends the world. With enemies new and old gathering forces, he will have to call on every part of himself to fight or he’ll lose everyone he cares about.

Even himself.

This is the third book of the Chronicles of Nick series. I've read the first two books and loved them. I read the second one a little while after it came out, so I've been waiting for this book for a long time. The first one, Infinity, was fast paced, funny, and had some good action. The same could be said of the second one, Invincible.

I hope this one will be just as good, if not better. It seems like it will be a good addition to the series.

Review: Wake

Wake (The Runners Part Four) by Logan Rutherford
Publication Date: November 25, 2011
Genre: YA
Amazon

Summary

Adam and Eve are trapped in the basement of the safe house, with Kappa soldiers right on top of them. In order to escape, Eve has to reveal shocking news Adam, risking their friendship, and even their sanity.

Questions are answered, and lies are uncovered. But sometimes, the truth has more consequences than them all

Wake is the forth in this series by Logan Rutherford and we are finally getting answers.

However, to the answers, I was in complete shock towards them. I most definitely didn't see it coming and I loved that it was even more of an bigger twist then what I read in a review for this bad boy.

If you've read the last three then this will most absolutely put a smile on your face. We enter a world we don't see coming and it's amazing. You wont be disappointed, I tell you.

On the other hand if you've haven't read it and you're looking for something fast and short, go and check this series out.

I can't say much or it'll spoil the big news but I can say is....

that I am happy and can't wait to get and read the final, Eden. Plus, I can't wait for his latest project. Twist and turns, a little romance blooming and a big decision has to be made before their world goes down in crumbles.

Two birds, One stone

Now since I reached my goal for Outdo Yourself I'm going to move it up to....drum roll, please....50 books this year. Woohoo!
Can't wait to see how far I get to that new goal. :)
Happy Reading Everybody!

Review: Pathfinder by Orson Scott Card

Pathfinder (Pathfinder, #1)

Summary
Rigg is well trained at keeping secrets. Only his father knows the truth about Rigg's strange talent for seeing the paths of people's pasts. But when his father dies, Rigg is stunned to learn just how many secrets Father had kept from him - secrets about Rigg's own past, his identity, and his destiny. And when Rigg discovers that he has the power not only to see the past, but also to change it, his future suddenly becomes anything but certain.
Rigg's birthright sets him on a path that leaves him caught between two factions, one that wants him crowned and one that wants him dead. He will be forced to question everything he thinks he knows, choose who to trust, and push the limits of his talent . . .or forfeit control of his destiny.

T was pleasantly surprised by this book. I wasn't sure what to expect when I first started reading it. I definitely didn't expect not one, but two stories.

Saving the human race is a frantic business. Or a tedious one. It all depends on what stage of the process you're taking part in.

At the start of each chapter, you get a piece of a short story. The story ties in to the main story. The amount you get varies from three sentences for the first chapter to a little more than one and a half pages for chapter two.
The main story on the other hand, I felt was a little lengthy. The book is 657 pages, with about 630 of them were the main story, (give or take five pages). Even though I thought the book was good, I felt that there were details that were not need. Other than that, I found the book was well written and  the characters were well developed. Rigg, main character, was a character that I could get behind. Umbo and Loaf were great compains for Rigg.
I think the author did a great job at not only writing two good stories, but also tying them together. The plot did get a little bit complicated at times, but I never once felt lost. I definitely recommend reading this book.

The Iron King (Iron Fey #1) by Julie Kagawa
Publication Date: February 1st 2010
Genre: YA Fantasy
Pages: 363
Goodreads

Summary
Meghan Chase has a secret destiny; one she could never have imagined.

Something has always felt slightly off in Meghan's life, ever since her father disappeared before her eyes when she was six. She has never quite fit in at school or at home.

When a dark stranger begins watching her from afar, and her prankster best friend becomes strangely protective of her, Meghan senses that everything she's known is about to change.

But she could never have guessed the truth - that she is the daughter of a mythical faery king and is a pawn in a deadly war. Now Meghan will learn just how far she'll go to save someone she cares about, to stop a mysterious evil no faery creature dare face; and to find love with a young prince who might rather see her dead than let her touch his icy heart.

I know I'm kind of slow on this trend but sometimes that's a good thing, because since they're four plus some .5's out there, if I really get into this book (when I do pick it up) I won't have to wait a whole year to get my hands on the next in the series.

Sometimes not following a trend can be a good thing. (:

This world Cheryl created in this short story has me craving for more. For the book that truly starts it all and I can't wait till that day I get my hands on it, comes.

The way her words flow, just like the thoughts Caitlyn receives around her, is amazing and hooks you in. I want to learn more about these characters and how a norm is cool knowing a Para, I want to know more of the world they live in and how being a Para became illegal. I want, I want, I want.... :)

Daring You To Read (14).......The Runners Series

Daring You To Read is a brand new meme by Tynga's Reviews. Is where you choose a book you’ve read, loved and would dare your readers to read! The book you choose must be an older release (at least 6 months ago), because let’s be honest, we’re all quite aware of the latest releases.

This week I'm going Indie on you.

Since there's been a lot of free kindle books going up on amazon lately I've kind of gone crazy but.....I've found some fun gems out there.

If you're a revisiting reader of this blog then you've seen most of my In My Mailbox post. Where I've shown case tons and tons of Kindle deals. And some of them are Indies.

So, in this weeks Daring You To Read post I'll be talking about a new favorite Indie author of mine.

His name is Logan Rutherford and has a bright future. And the coolest thing about this guy is that.....he's younger than me. He's still in high school! Crazy, right? (I know they say "never ask a women about her age", however, I'm 19)

Runner (The Runners #1) by Logan Rutherford
Publication Date: June 4th 2011
Genre: YA

Summary

He just turned sixteen. He just got his first car. He is having the best time of his life. Then, his family? Gone. His life? Turned upside down. All he does now is run. He's running from some very bad guys. He's running to find answers. Time is ticking. In order to survive - in order to find his family - he must become, a Runner.

This series is fast paced, action packed, mysterious, and totally fun. Plus, it's short so if you're busy like me this is a nice little fixer upper for a craving in between things. (like classes....)

Told in male point of view, lots of twist and turns. Four out of five of this series are free. The fifth, Eden, just came out and is only .99 (it shouldn't hurt you too much).

My reviews

To come

Wake

And I'll no doubt be buying the next,

Eden

Happy Reading Everybody!

Genre: YA Contemporary
Pages: 384

Summary

Sometimes the end is just the beginning.

Gabby lived under the radar until her makeover. Way under. but when she started her senior year as a blonder, better-dressed version of herself, she struck gold: Billy Nash believed she was all the flawless girl she was pretending to be. The next eight months with Billy were bliss...Until the night Gabby woke up on the ground next to the remains of his BMW without a single memory of how she got there.

And Billy's nowhere to be found.

All Gabby wants is to make everything perfect again. But getting her life back isn't difficult, it's impossible. Because nothing is the same, and Gabby's beginning to realize she's missed more than a few danger signs along the way.

It's time for Gabby to face the truth, even if it means everything changes.

Memorable Monday (2)

Memorable Monday is a brand new meme hosted by Escape in a Book

How to participate?
1. Share a quote that has captured your interest lately in a Memorable Monday post on your blog. Feel free to grab my logo (download it to your computer first).
2. Come back here and leave the link to your post in our inlinkz widget.
3. It would be nice if you visited one or two of the other participants.
4. If you tweet your posts then feel free to use the hastag #MemorableMonday

This quote is from one of my top 2012 reads.

From a book that was touching, where the main character was very sick with cancer and at the ending it really it home because at the time a close old friend was going through the painful stages of the cancer. So, (I tend to choke up writing this stuff) this quote should stick within everybodies life, because.....you just never know when that day comes and you're not here anymore.

Rest in Peace,

Brian

I've come to realize that life doesn't wait. If we stand still it passes us by, and by the time we understand that, it may be too late.

Review: My Soul To Lose

My Soul To Lose (Soul Screamers 0.5) by Rachel Vincent
Pubilcation Date: July 1st 2009
Genre: YA Fantasty
Pages: 87
Goodreads

Summary

It was supposed to be a fun day, shopping at the mall with her best friend. Then the panic attack started and Kaylee Cavanaugh finds herself screaming, unable to stop. Her secret fears are exposed and it's the worst day of her life.

Until she wakes up in the psychiatric unit.

She tries to convince everyone she's fine--despite the shadows she sees forming around another patient and the urge to scream which comes burbling up again and again. Everyone thinks she's crazy. Everyone except Lydia, that is. Another patient with some special abilities....

"An eBook exclusive prequel to Rachel Vincent's SOUL SCREAMERS series."

My Soul To Lose is a great start to a fun young adult fantasy series.

When I dove in I didn't know how hooked I'll get. The description of the keening scream deep with in her throat, the real way of how she ended up in the mental ward, and the mysterious girl that can't keep her eyes off of Kaylee were the things that made this a page turner. Plus, the creepy shadowy figures she sees when she let's out that scream in the beginning. Wow.

It seems to end quickly and the ending.....amazing. Didn't see it coming, I thought I had that girl figured out but was tots wrong. This of course will want you to read more about Kaylee and this desire to scream of hers.

Also, I want to know more about that one girl you'll meet in this short story. I would love to know what happen to her.

If you love a hard copy more than ebooks and what not, you can get it along with the first two stories in the Soul Screamers series within Vol. 1

Which I started to devour even though I said I wouldn't read any books because of school. But this girl couldn't help herself in wanting more. Like, I said, it'll hook you.

Dr. Nelson: "Do you have any family history of mental instability?"
Me: "Yes. My cousin thinks she's twenty-one. My aunt thinks she's eighteen. I'd call them both mentally unstable."
