{Blog Tour} Review & Giveaways: Transfusion (Aurora Sky: Vampire Hunter #1) by Nikki Jefford

Transfusion (Aurora Sky: Vampire Hunter, #1)

Transfusion (Aurora Sky: Vampire Hunter #1) by Nikki Jefford
Publication Date: December 9th 2012
Genre: YA Paranormal
Pages: 231
Goodreads
Amazon & Barnes

~Summary~

If there is one thing eighteen-year-old Aurora Sky wants, it’s to get off the iceberg she calls home. Being kissed before she graduates wouldn’t hurt either.

Then a near-fatal car wreck changes everything. Government agents step in and save Aurora’s life in exchange for her services as a vampire hunter. In Alaska. Basically she’s a glorified chew toy. All thanks to her rare blood type, which sends a vampire into temporary paralysis right before she has to finish the job… by hand.

Now Aurora’s only friends are groupies of the undead and the only boy she can think about may very well be a vampire. And if he’s a vampire, will she be forced to kill him?

For ages 18+

~My Thoughts~

Mrs. Jefford knows how to reel one in and keep you along the entertaining rides she creates for us readers. I was hooked the first day and finished the next and that doesn’t happen much when it comes to kindle novels (more than 200 pages). So this was a very quick read for me and I can't wait till the next book comes out. I hear it is more thrilling, action packed, and has a bit of menace along the ride of the words Nikki has created into an awesome sequel, so I am very excited to see how she took the second book.
Anyways, let’s stay on topic shall we ha-ha. I was swept into this world and one that starts up quick. Aurora gets into a car crash in the snowy, icy land of Alaska and this is where her life turns for the worst. Well, at least in the beginning in her eyes. Because of her blood type a special agent group was drawn to her. Here is where she becomes something else, get something that'll make her stronger and have her grow into a kick ass kind of character.
And I absolutely just loved the test the agents put her through. It was thrilling and sitting on the edge of your seat kind of scene, one that got me very excited for this book. Another thing that got me excited about this book was the New Year’s resolutions Aurora wanted to get done; kill a vampire, get drunk, kiss a boy, lose virginity. However the execution of them happen way faster than what I was hoping for, which was going to get them done throughout the book. No, they get done through just a couple of chapters before the halfway point, I believe ha-ha. So that sadden me a bit but like I said, Mrs. Jefford moves fast with her stories.
I was extremely immersed into this story, plot, and world Nikki had created but I just wished we got more of certain things or wished certain things have turned out differently. I wished I got to see more of Alaska, yes Aurora does travel a few times to different places in Alaska but I feel like I needed more description, for I have never been so I wished it could have felt more like I was there with Aurora. Since this is aimed more towards older teens there is a vivid sex scene but one that tells the truth of how a first time goes, painful and bloody. I didn't have a problem with it but I had a problem with Aurora's attitude towards losing it. Sadly she didn't put much thought towards it and just wanted to get rid of being a virgin, though I believe she should have been proud of that, of bring a virgin. A bit of a spoil alert but she had to get drunk to go through with it. Yeah, what a downer. I know first times aren’t all romantic and magical but you should at least do it with someone you truly care about and trust with your very being. So that bugged me.
Another thing that bugged me was at the end we all of a sudden get a big bad guy and it was great till it ends quickly and simply. Though I am happy to hear there will be a much better bad guy in the next book, Northern Bites. But beside those few things and having to get used to Aurora’s personality, overall this kept my attention and I finished quickly. The writing style moves the pace nicely and is done simply but it'll have you glued to this original vampire story with no problem. And one series I cannot wait to continue. So, if you're a fan of vampires then this is a series you should take the time to look into.

Will disturb your being!

~Excerpt from Snow White Blood Red~

Dear Wilhelm Carl Grimm,

She is not that giddy, naïve, and helpless princess she pretends to be. Please don’t let her fool you with her innocence if you see her sing to the birds in the forest. Resist her charm from bringing joyful tears to your eyes, and shield yourself from her devious beauty before she deceives you into wanting to kiss her awake. It'll  be a kiss of death. Your death. That’s how she fooled the Huntsman, Prince Charming, and me, her birth mother.

I still remember the original script of the fairy tale, the one you wrote in 1812. It clearly stated that she was my own flesh and blood daughter. I don’t have the slightest idea why you altered it fifty years later.

What was the point of turning me into an evil, narcissistic, and heartless stepmother, blinded by jealousy and envy of the young princess?

For years, I have been looking forward to telling you the truth about her, but you were impossible to reach.

I am glad I found your brother, Jacob. He told me that you wanted to tone the stories down so children could sleep better at night, instead of having nightmares about the Queen who sought to eat her daughter’s heart and liver.

Shame on you, Wilhelm.

You, of all authors, knew why I wanted to kill her. My actions were justified. I was trying to save my kingdom from her wrath, before everything we loved was destined to an end. The same way you had to rewrite the true fairytales after cursing us, so the War of Sorrows would end forever after.

Night after night, and year after year, parents fed their children false bedtime stories, until your lies grew into inescapable memories. Your happily ever after lies, Wilhelm, shaped the so called fairy tale world.

I wondered why you didn’t burn the original scripts, instead of rewriting them. You must have figured out that sooner or later someone would dig up the truth and expose you. Altering it was the smarter solution. You let children believe that the bites were resurrecting kisses, and that torturing glass coffins were made for sleeping beauties, waiting for a prince to come and kiss them awake.

A wise man once said that the greatest trick the devil ever pulled was convincing the world he was someone else. You did the same with us, Wilhelm. You turned us into pastiches of the immortals that we really are, and made it harder for us if wanted to persuade the world otherwise.

I know that you did it to save us from her. And I appreciate how you concealed our real names, or we would have ended up like Rumpelstiltskin, tortured by those who knew of his real name.

But sometimes, I can’t help but wonder why no one ever questioned why I was called the Evil Queen, and why I was never given a real name in the books.

Was I so superficial to the world, so stereotypical and mundane? Why was I treated as if I were the monster of the week?

You know what I think? I think that the world never got the time to hate me. It just wanted to hate me long before it met me.

If I tell those who detest me about the true nature of their little princess, would they ever care about me half as much as they care about her?

I know that deep inside, they adore me. They like the way I talk, walk, dress, and even the way I kill.

They are just afraid to admit how much they love me. I am the Snow White Queen, strong enough that I don’t need anyone’s pity or love, because I am loved by the greatest and most majestic heart in the world:

Mine.

Wonderlander, Neverlander, Unicorn-chaser, enchanter, musician, survived a coma, & totally awesome. Sometimes I tell stories. Always luv the little monsters I write young adult paranormal romance, urban fantasy, and science fiction mostly. The Grimm Diaries series is a seven book saga that deals with retellings of fairy tales from a young adult POV - it connects most of the fairy tales together and claims to be the truth about fairy tales. I live in San Fransisco and seriously think circles are way cooler than triangles.

{Book Blast} Blue Hearts of Mars by Nicole Grotepas

Blue Hearts of Mars by Nicole Grotepas

Retta Heikkinen knows the unspoken rule of society: love between androids and humans is forbidden. A simple enough edict until Hemingway Koskinen spends an evening charming her with his intense gaze, bewitching smile, and sparkling conversation that hints at so much more than the usual obsessions of high school boys. Rules were meant to be cast aside, especially when love beckons.

If only it were as simple as being in love.

Trouble is brewing, not just for Hemingway--for all androids. Secrets have been kept, lies propagated, and Retta soon discovers that a frightening future awaits thousands of androids if she doesn’t do something to stop it. Worse yet, she will lose the one love she’s ever endangered herself for: Hemingway.

Praise

"Nothing like I've read before. A true original story! Everything is so well described. Now if they could make a follow up book and movie, that would be great!" ~Mrs. Z (Amazon)

"I was addicted to this book from the beginning. Life on Mars was very real and not at all a sci fi world I didn't understand . . . I found myself rooting for Retta and Hemingway from the very beginning. Easy reading, couldn't put it down and had it read in a weekend. Waiting for a sequel!" ~TNielsen (Amazon)

"The ending of this book is exceptional. While it was different from what I imagined, the way the author brought in a shocking revelation was amazing. I probably reread the last chapter 3 times letting it sink in and the meaning behind it. It was truly beautiful . . . I would love to see more of Retta and Hemingway!" ~Kat Meyer, (Goodreads)

"I love how the author populated Mars . . . so descriptive and comprehensive . . . I could clearly picture everything as if I was seeing the movie &/or was along for the ride. . . . Retta, the main character, is strong, opinionated, and a great champion for her cause." ~Megan (Amazon)

"I had been in the worst reading slump ever and came across this on Goodreads and thought I'd give it a try. Well, I was pleasantly surprised on how funny and exciting and mysterious it was . . . Mei, Retta's bff, had me laughing out loud quite a bit as well as Retta herself. I'd definitely hang out with those two." ~Deanneluvbooks (Goodreads)

Review: The Final Hour

The Final Hour (The Homelanders #4) by Andrew Klavan
Publication Date: July 19,2011
Genre: YA Adventure
Pages: 345

Summary

"You're not alone. You're never alone."

Charlie West has held on to that belief, but now he's starting to wonder. He went to bed one night an ordinary high-school kid. When he woke up, he was wanted for murder and hunted by a ruthless band of terrorists. He's been on the run ever since. Now he's stuck in prison, abandoned by his allies, trying desperately to stay a step ahead of vicious prison gangs and brutal guards. And a flash of returning memory tells him another terrorist strike is coming--soon. A million people will die unless he does something. But what? He's stuck in a concrete cage with no way out and no one who can help. Charlie has never felt so alone--and yet he knows he can't give in or give up . . . not with the final hour ticking away."

I loved the rest of the series. And this wasn't a bad way to end it.

It kind of had two paces. At first it seemed slow. Then, the ending, felt way to fast. And the action kept getting interrupted by thoughts from the main character, Charlie. He would be fighting and then start talking about morals and right and wrong. It did kind of take away from the book. Most questions, if not all, were answered. But the ending was kind of predictable.

Charlie wasn't bad. He took to much time, and pages, making decisions that should be easy to make. He talks a lot about morals, right and wrong, and freedom. And he tended to repeat things, which got annoying. At this point, he had no more development to be had. Other characters are what they were before. The character I want to talk about the most is Prince.

And, yes, there will be spoilers in the next paragraph.

He is made out to be this evil genius. This bad guy that is next to invincible. But, when he came down to it, he wasn't. He trusted his lackeys to take care of Charlie. And he didn't even make sure he was dead. And then he died so easily. He didn't put up much of a fight. His lackeys put up a better fight. I just thought he would be tougher.

In total, the book did suck me in. It was a good ending for a series. It wasn't the best book in the series, but it was good. I wish somethings were done differently, but I liked it.

J. A. Huss likes to write new adult books that make you think and keep you guessing. Her favorite genre to read is space opera, but since practically no one reads those books, she writes new adult science fiction, paranormal romance, contemporary romance, urban fantasy, and books about Junco (who refuses to be saddled with a label).

She has an undergraduate degree in horses, (yes, really–Thank you, Colorado State University) and a master’s degree in forensic toxicology from the University of Florida. She used to have a job driving around Colorado doing pretty much nothing but shooting the breeze with farmers, but now she just writes, runs the New Adult Addiction and Clean Teen Reads Book Blogs, and runs an online science classroom for homeschoolers.

~Summary~

NEO – Network of Extraordinaires and Otherworldlies:

Those who answer the call from NEO play their part in maintaining balance in our ever-changing times. With power-hungry malcontents, jealous gods, and even those with misguided good intentions, the fate of our world has oft been held in the hands of unsung heroes such as those that are members of NEO.

But before NEO, these heroes and heroines had lives, loves, issues and interests that didn’t involve saving mankind.

In Frailties of the Bond, it only takes one bite to change a life…

After a hiking trip gone wrong, sixteen-year-old Luca should have been dead. Since then, he’s drifted from one school day to the next, annoyed by the looks of suspicion. When a vampire attack claimed his mother and forced his first shift into animal form, Luca set out for Texas, vengeance bound, only to discover so much more when Aimee crossed his path.

Flesh-born of vampire parents sixteen years ago, Aimee shouldn’t exist. Magic, though, made dreams come true for an undead couple desperate for a child all their own. But this magic came with a price, a cost Aimee discovered after one forbidden bite

~Excerpt~

The pulse of the bass line traveled across the field and rattled the body of Mouse’s Challenger, the rave at full swing. Glow sticks waved in the air to the fast-paced rhythm of synthesizers high on musical ecstasy. The bouncer tore our tickets, spouted his “don’t cause a riot” act then gave us a head nod, universal for “get the hell in already”.
Shelley drifted into bloodlust, fangs extended, eyes glossed over with a dull yellow sheen. By party’s end, they would be a blazing gold after she got her fill. She peeled from us and disappeared from sight.
Mouse stayed with me just long enough for a Thor look-alike to ask her to dance. She chucked me the peace sign and left.
There I stood. All alone. By the bar.
Three feet away, a vampire fed on a girl. Out in the open! It was a spectacle I hadn’t seen before. Her blood ran like red tendrils pooling onto her cleavage. Sloppy eater.
“Care for a Bloody Joey?” the bartender asked, pulling me out of the moment, and probably saving me from the embarrassment of gawking like the newbie I was.
“A bloody who-what?”
“Bloody Joey. Mary’s supply always depletes five minutes after the party starts. We still have Joey, Alexander and Alice. I’d recommend Joey. His blood has a smooth texture.”
I was stuck, too ashamed to ask if he would put the blood in a cup or pass the person over the bar.

Born and raised in Little Rock, AR, Angela now calls Central Texas home.

Reading and writing have been lifelong passions. It was around the time she gave birth to her forever-love, nicknamed Chipmunk, that she really took writing seriously. After all, how could she teach her child to follow her dreams if she hadn't tried herself? As a YA fantasy/sci-fi reader and author, she favors the magical, mysterious, the darker side of life...even harbors a secret fright for things that go bump in the night.
NEVERLOVE is a special project spawned from a blog-challenge-turned-blog-opera,
the Abby and Basil affair. It is the first in the Shadow Jumpers series.
FRAILTIES OF THE BOND is the first in a series of novellas and short stories introducing heroes and heroines of the secret organization, NEO – Network of Extraordinaires and Otherwordlies.

Know Us Better (18)

Know Me Better is a Weekly Meme hosted by I'm A Reader, Not A Writer. Each week she'll pick 5 questions off of her author's interview list to answer and invites us to join in on the fun, giving a way for our readers to get to know us better.

What is the kindest thing anyone has done for you?

A: The thing that comes to mind is my family, friends, and my boyfriend all supporting me with my dreams, if that’s not the kindest thing in the world than I don’t know what is ha-ha. Okay that and finding someone that you are beautiful inside and out, yeah I went sappy on you guys ha-ha ^_^

T: Just my family believing in me. That might seem kind of sad but I never needed much more than that.

What is most memorable about your high school years?

A: My high school was being home schooled through Penn Foster, so I didn’t experience the normal High School things but being home schooled allowed me to find my passion for writing and reading, so I am very grateful for that. Also grateful for the lack of drama and my awesome GPA, too.

T: I’m in the same boat as Ashley. But for the record, my GPA was better.

Update, A: Yeah, but like by only .4 points you dork :P! Ashley 3.4, Tasha 3.8 out of 4.0

Have you ever gotten up early for a "black Friday sale"?

A: Never got up early but last year my boyfriend, I and a couple of friends stayed in the long line for Best Buy for a few hours before they opened around 12, we were there plus the mall for a few hours.

T: No. And I don’t know if I ever will.

Were you named after anyone?

A: Nope, not really. My mom just loved the name Ashley though we do joke about me being named after the furniture store ha-ha.

T: Star Trek.  Lieutenant Tasha Yar. That’s all I got to say about that.

Would you bungee jump, skydive or something similar?

A: Most definitely something similar, like, indoor skydiving. I’m like seriously afraid of heights so I’m sure those things would kill me but indoor skydiving doesn’t scare me as much as I am not falling out of a plain or off any bridge ha-ha. The only thing I have to worry about is a big ass fan ha-ha, I think I’ll take my chances ^_^

T: I want to skydive at least once in my life. I think that is just something you should do before you die.

Thanks for getting to know us!
