The Casquette Girls (The Casquette Girls, #1)
The Casquette Girls (The Casquette Girls #1) by Alys Arden
Publication Date: October 31st 2013
Genre: Young Adult Paranormal

~Summary~

Seven girls tied by time.
Five powers that bind.
One curse to lock the horror away.
One attic to keep the monsters at bay.

After the Storm of the Century rips apart New Orleans, Adele Le Moyne and her father are among the first to return to the city following the mandatory evacuation. Adele wants nothing more than for life to return to normal, but with the silent city resembling a mold-infested war zone, a parish-wide curfew, and mysterious new faces lurking in the abandoned French Quarter, normal will have to be redefined.

Events too unnatural – even for New Orleans – lead Adele to an attic that has been sealed for three hundred years, and the chaos she unleashes threatens not only her life but everyone she knows. Mother Nature couldn’t drain the joie de vivre from the Big Easy, but someone or something is draining life from its residents.

Caught suddenly in a hurricane of eighteenth-century myths and monsters, Adele must quickly untangle a web of magic that links the climbing murder rate back to her own ancestors. But who can you trust in a city where everyone has a secret, and where keeping them can be a matter of life and death – unless, that is, you’re immortal.

Booker started toward them, but stopped when he heard metal creak again.
Turning back, he saw the bus pitch forward once more and fall nose-first into the raging water below.
Elray then spoke the first words Booker had ever heard him say: "I don't think that was part of the plan."

Ashley's Review: The Sleepwalker (Fear Street #6) by R.L Stine

The Sleepwalker (Fear Street, #6)
The Sleepwalker (Fear Street #6) by R.L Stine
Publication Date: August 1st 1991
Genre: Young Adult Mystery
Pages: 164
Format: Paperback
Source: Bought
Read: October 24 to 25, 2014

~Summary~

'SOMEBODY HELP - DON'T LET ME SLEEPWALK AGAIN!'

One week after she starts her summer job on Fear Street with old Mrs Cottler, Mayra Barnes begins to sleepwalk, waking up in the dead of night not knowing where she is. Mayra becomes even more terrified when she discovers Mrs Cottler may be a witch...

Is the old woman casting spells on Mayra? To add to Mayra's horror, she is being followed by a menacing stranger who seems to recognize her - but she's never seen him in her life!

Mayra's sleepwalking is leading her into more and more peril. She soon realizes she must take action. She must find out what is happening to her - or she may never leave Fear Street alive!

~My Thoughts~

The Sleepwalker was more of a suspense mystery than a horror like the rest of R.L Stine Fear Street series. And though it had me hooked and interested, I still feel like things were missing for me or the book wasn't really moving along but dragging even though this is a very quick read like usual with Mr. Stine's books. I don't know, I just wasn't fully satisfied.

Perfect for Halloween, witch's are brewing in the night and Mayra believes her boss Mrs. Cottler is behind the reasoning why she's all of a sudden sleep walking. Though all signs point to her, I knew it would be too easy, there just had to be a logical reason behind her character. Mayra thought so too but with her mind not quite there, thanks to the lack of sleep (nightmare of elm street anyone! Though she's not fighting a razor clawed burned murderer, but something that's hidden deep within her), all logic was shot out the window. It didn't help that her mom made fun of it at first, making her feel just a bit crazy. Girl, I know the feel. Nurses are just like that, especially if they've been doing it most of their life. I felt bad Mayra didn't really have anyone to talk to, I mean she talked to people but they just weren't quite believing her that something was truly wrong.

When pieces of the puzzle started to come together I knew it was going to be that certain person. Though why they did it I thought it was going to be way worse. Even though what they did was horrible, what I was thinking was twice as horrible and with the character being crazy, I wouldn't doubt they're capable of what I was thinking truly happened. I wasn't blown away because I already had a feeling it was this person but why they did it, it was a shock and totally an sitting on the edge of your seat kind of moment. Mr. Stine is great at creating intense, panic scenes along with hooking you to start another chapter when you should be doing something else haha.

Overall I enjoyed it and I devoured it for sure but something was just missing for me. It wasn't the typical slasher type horror he writes but it helped me with my reading craving and it was an enjoyable mystery. So if you're not into the bloody, serial killer type horror, more the suspense type then this book is for you! Your mind will be just as confused as Mayra's and it's one sinking scary feeling to go through. I'm surprised she didn't go crazy haha.

Fashionably Dead (Hot Damned, #1)
Fashionably Dead (Hot Damned #1) by Robyn Peterman
Publication Date: September 2nd 2013
Genre: Adult Paranormal

~Summary~

Vampyres don’t exist. They absolutely do not exist.

At least I didn’t think they did ‘til I tried to quit smoking and ended up Undead. Who in the hell did I screw over in a former life that my getting healthy equates with dead?

Now I’m a Vampyre. Yes, we exist whether we want to or not. However, I have to admit, the perks aren’t bad. My girls no longer jiggle, my ass is higher than a kite and the latest Prada keeps finding its way to my wardrobe. On the downside, I’m stuck with an obscenely profane Guardian Angel who looks like Oprah and a Fairy Fighting Coach who’s teaching me to annihilate like the Terminator.

To complicate matters, my libido has increased to Vampyric proportions and my attraction to a hotter than Satan’s underpants killer rogue Vampyre is not only dangerous . . . it’s possibly deadly. For real dead. Permanent death isn’t on my agenda. Avoiding him is my only option. Of course, since he thinks I’m his, it’s easier said than done. Like THAT’S not enough to deal with, all the other Vampyres think I’m some sort of Chosen One.

Holy Hell, if I’m in charge of saving an entire race of blood suckers, the Undead are in for one hell of a ride.

{Cover Reveal + Giveaway} Withering Hope by Layla Hagen

Withering Hope by Layla Hagen
Publication Date: January 19th 2015
Genre: Adult Contemporary Romance

~Summary~

Aimee’s wedding is supposed to turn out perfect. Her dress, her fiancĂ©, and the location—the idyllic holiday ranch in Brazil—are perfect.

But all Aimee’s plans come crashing down when the private jet that’s taking her from the U.S. to the ranch—where her fiancĂ© awaits—defects mid-flight and the pilot is forced to perform an emergency landing in the heart of the Amazon rainforest.

With no way to reach civilization, being rescued is Aimee and Tristan’s—the pilot—only hope. A slim one that slowly withers away, desperation taking its place. Because death wanders in the jungle under many forms: starvation, diseases. Beasts.
As Aimee and Tristan fight to find ways to survive, they grow closer. Together they discover that facing old, inner agonies carved by painful pasts takes just as much courage, if not even more, than facing the rainforest.

Despite her devotion to her fiancĂ©, Aimee can’t hide her feelings for Tristan—the man for whom she’s slowly becoming everything. You can hide many things in the rainforest. But not lies. Or love.

Withering Hope is the story of a man who desperately needs forgiveness and the woman who brings him hope. It is a story in which hope births wings and blooms into a love that is as beautiful and intense as it is forbidden.

Ashley's Review: Delirium (Debt Collector #1) by Susan Kaye Quinn

Delirium (Debt Collector 1)
Delirium (Debt Collector #1) by Susan Kaye Quinn
Publication Date: December 30th 2013
Genre: New Adult Dystopia
Pages: 42
Format: Kindle
Source: Free on Amazon
Read: October 23, 2014

~Summary~

Delirium - EPISODE 1 of the nine-part, first season of the Debt Collector serial.
SEASON ONE NOW COMPLETE.

What's your life worth on the open market?
A debt collector can tell you precisely.

Lirium plays the part of the grim reaper well, with his dark trenchcoat, jackboots, and the black marks on his soul that every debt collector carries. He's just in it for his cut, the ten percent of the life energy he collects before he transfers it on to the high potentials, the people who will make the world a better place with their brains, their work, and their lives. That hit of life energy, a bottle of vodka, and a visit from one of Madam Anastazja's sex workers keep him alive, stable, and mostly sane... until he collects again. But when his recovery ritual is disrupted by a sex worker who isn't what she seems, he has to choose between doing an illegal hit for a girl whose story has more holes than his soul or facing the bottle alone--a dark pit he's not sure he'll be able to climb out of again.

~My Thoughts~

Looking for a quick read because I haven't really been reading much lately, I go through my kindle and find this, remembering the hype for this series. So looking up the summary, I was instantly drawn to it!

Delirium took me for a ride! The debt collecting is intense! Having the power to take someone's life when they're ready to go and then giving it to someone younger who's going to do something good with the extra time added to their health is an intriguing concept and truly a scary world to live in. Especially when a ten year old girl that's supposed to be getting new treatments for her cancer is being left behind by this society.

In this short I couldn't exactly connect to Lirium however I enjoyed learning about him, watching him go through his routine of collecting and his way of medicating himself after he collects as he truly doesn't have much of a soul himself. Being a collector can take a lot out of someone and it seems that depression isn't uncommon in their lives, so trying to keep himself sane he likes to drink from a bottle but not alone. He always hires a sex worker to get lost but the one that shows up this one time is looking for something in return. Lirium is unsure at first and very angry, however not wanting to be alone he goes along with it. Getting swept into this mysterious girl, he learns all is not what it seems in this world and I wasn't shocked that the society might be hiding a few things here and there.

Overall, I too got swept into this world and can't wait to continue this series by Mrs. Quinn. She's able to paint a picture perfectly and it's an intense one!

How (Not) to Play with Magic (Cindy Eller 0.5) by Elizabeth A. Reeves
Publication Date: March 18th 2013
Genre: Adult Paranormal
Pages: 25
Format: Kindle

Read: October 17, 2014

~Summary~

A Cindy Eller Short story.

Cindy Eller is a witch and a baker. She is making a name for herself in the world of desserts with her new and unique flavor profiles.

But juggling her weird family and trying to keep her magic a secret from her roommates is a daily challenge.

And her twin sisters, Starrie and Rainey Skye won't hesitate to bring the trouble right to her door.

~My Thoughts~

How (Not) to Play with Magic is the perfect taste of the Cindy Eller world Mrs. Reeves has created. In just a few pages you get to see the adventurous life Cindy lives and sometimes the most fun is caused by trouble.

In the middle of the night her twin half-sister's pop into her apartment she shares with two mortal women, her friends, and as her sisters drag her into their latest disaster Cindy tries so badly to hide it from her roommates. To her surprise, later on, she's not doing a very good job after all haha.

Overall, this was a fun short that completely hooked me! Got me craving for How (Not) to Kiss a Toad and for Cindy's other bakery creations. I've got such a major sweet tooth and when a book centers around the subject of desserts I can't help but get drawn into it. Witchy adventures is just the cherry on the top! Cindy is spunky and doesn't mind speaking her mind and I can't wait to read more about her. With her curse I so badly hope she'll be able to break it because I'm such a hopeless romantic and not being able to be in love in fear of turning the guy into a toad is heart breaking! How (Not) to Kiss a Toad is definitely going on my wish list! And the ending of this one was absolutely brilliant! Had me laughing haha.

Waiting on Wednesday (41)

Welcome to Waiting on Wednesday! Waiting on Wednesday is a weekly event that is hosted by Jill at Breaking the Spine and spotlights upcoming releases we are eagerly anticipating. This week I am anxiously awaiting:

This Spells Trouble (Lynlee Lincoln, #3)
This Spells Trouble (Lynlee Lincoln #3) by Olivia Hardin
Publication Date: December 14th 2014
Genre: Adult Paranormal Romance

~Summary~

It took some work, but Lynlee Lincoln has finally found balance between her life as a witch and her relationship with Beck Hale. A human boyfriend with two kids wasn’t something she ever planned, but their new arrangement lets her have her cake and eat it, too. Just when she’s getting comfortable, puzzling visions of impending danger at home begin to haunt her dreams.

And if personal issues aren’t troubling enough, Lynlee and the entire organization of Neutralizers go on alert when a phantom creature begins staging magical episodes on live television. If they can’t put a stop to the sensational events, all hell will break loose in the human world. Can Lynlee keep both her new family and the world safe without getting swallowed up in the process?

Why I'm Waiting:

Because I absolutely love this world Mrs. Hardin has created! I've read both Trolling for Trouble and Tangled Up in Trouble, one and two in the series, and fell head over heels with these books! At the end of Tangled Up in Trouble was a perfect opening for a third book and just finding out ones already planned to come out soon, I'm super excited!

This series is charming, magical, entertaining, and one world I don't mind getting sucked into! Lynlee is like a Fairy Godmother as she has charges and takes care of other mythical creatures in the real world and it gives off this warm and fuzzy feeling as your reading!

Here's a few words from my reviews:

"I absolutely loved and enjoyed this! Trolling for Trouble is charming, humorous, and completely original. Olivia has presented us with such a sweet and exciting storyline, with great detail into Lynlee's world in just 66 pages."

"Overall, I enjoyed this short! It completely captured me this morning and when I was done, I was smiling from ear to ear. It will make your heart melt, along with painting a great new world that will mesmerize you."

"Lynlee Lincoln is such a fun character to read about! She’s sassy, tough, magical, and someone that has a big heart, a heart that can get her into trouble sometimes."

"Tangled Up in Trouble, just like the first in the series Trolling for Trouble, sucked me in and wouldn’t let me go. All I wanted to do was read this charming novella."

"In Tangled Up in Trouble Lynlee discovers more of herself and finally lets the power flow through all the while trying to have a second chance with a man she has always loved!"

Can't wait to see what other trouble Lynlee gets herself into!

Lake McCain: a Marine, tall, ripped—and the best friend of my dead fiancĂ©. Cal died to save Lake, and now Lake claims that he carries a debt to me that he can never repay.

Until he confesses that he may be falling in love with me. I can’t deny that there is something between us. But a relationship? I just can’t. I’ve used up all my chances at love. My past relationships have ended in death or disaster, and now I have to live with all of that.

~Excerpt~

“Thank you for this,” I say, my voice small and quiet.  “This was all you.  You didn’t have to, and no one asked.  But you did it.  And for that, I’m grateful.”
Lake slides his hands into his pockets and takes a few slow steps toward me.  His eyes drop to the ground at our feet.  “You know, for a long time, I’ve felt like I didn’t really matter.  If that makes any sense.  Being in the Marines helped some.  But you know that feeling of emptiness?” he looks up at me, his eyes opening up in a way that I can see.  And I do know.  “It was always there.  But being here lately?  It’s changed that.  I love what we do here.  I love working the ranch and the long days and the feeling that I’m doing something good.  That I’m doing something important.”
He takes two more steps toward me.  He’s close enough that I can smell him now.  The sweat of the day.  The scent of his shampoo from this morning.  And something that is so Lake that it sends my head spinning.
“But it’s not just the ranch and the work, Riley,” he says quietly.  His voice is low and warm, just like the day outside.  “It’s you, too.  When I’m around you, I feel like I matter.”
Something builds inside of me, something that resembles a thousand hooves beating across the fields at sunrise.
One slow, carefully thought out step at a time, he closes the space between us.  He places a hand on the wall on either side of my head, boxing me in.  His eyes study my face.  My cheeks, my nose, my lips.  His face is so close.
Something in my blood jumps to life, and I’m staring at his mouth.
“What’s holding you back, Riley?” he finally says.  His voice is low and rough.  And there’s a mountain of unspoken words behind it.  “Why won’t you let yourself go?”

This is definitely on my Birthday/Christmas Wish List, I'm dying to read this! I promise I won't be too picky towards the Marine element, I'm sure Mrs. Taylor did loads of research, but being a Marine Fiancé and been there since the beginning of boot camp, MCT, MOS, and him being stationed the last year and a half, and the year it took for him to get shipped off to boot camp, I just can't help but be a little picky.....I don't mean to be, I promise haha. But nonetheless, I'm so excited for this one! I absolutely love The McCain family, read all of them so far, so I can't wait to read about Lake! ;)

Startled, I floundered to cover my boobs while splashing water over the side of the tub and all across the floor in the process. “What the hell! What are you - get out of here!” I threw a loofah at him but in my haste I missed.

Ignoring my demand, Rob moseyed over to kneel beside the bathtub, propping his arms on the edge and smirking at my compromising position. There weren’t any bubbles left to hide under, so I quickly drew my knees up to my chest and wrapped my arms around them. “What are you, deaf? I said get out!

“I heard what you said.” To my amazement, he dipped his fingers in the water and swirled them around. “Water’s getting cold.”

“Then take your hand out of it!” I snapped, my cheeks flushing pink.

“I think we should let it out.” He reached underwater for the drain stopper, and his grin slowly spread as my eyes widened.

“Don’t you dare.”

“See…payback’s a bitch, now isn’t it?”

“Don’t touch that drain. I mean it.” To my horror, I felt an overwhelming urge to laugh and I pressed my lips together to suppress a smile. For some idiotic reason, whenever I get nervous I start giggling like a deranged person. I have no idea why. It’s very annoying, especially because it happens at the most inopportune moments.

“I thought we were playing You-Show-Me-Yours-And-I’ll-Show-You-Mine.” He lifted the edge of the stopper just enough to tease me, allowing a small amount of water to escape. “Well, you had your go and now it’s my turn.”

“I think you’ve had one too many beers!” That probably wasn’t even far from the truth. After all, I’d never seen him acting this cheeky before.

“Whoops. Oh my goodness - what do we have here?” He plucked the stopper completely out and held it up, just out of my reach. The water began to rush down the drain. To me it seemed to be disappearing ten times faster than usual.

“It’s not funny!” I protested, even though I was struggling not to giggle at that point. My shoulders were shaking.

“I’m not the one laughing,” he reminded me.

“All right - fine, you got me back. Ha, ha, you’re so clever. At least hand me a towel.”

“Mm…I don’t think so.”

“Hand me a freaking towel!” The water was getting perilously low, and I shoved one foot over the drain to try and diminish the flow.

“You didn’t say please…” he sang softly.

“Rob…” I looked straight at him then, directly into those hazel eyes, and something I saw in them squashed my impulse to laugh. I don’t know what it was, but all of a sudden the only impulse I felt anymore was the overpowering urge to kiss him. And not only that. I had the craziest compulsion to wrap my arms around his neck and pull him on top of me and let him do me six ways to Sunday, right there in the bathtub.

My expression must have been transparent because his smile inexplicably faded. He hesitated for a moment, his eyes searching mine. For what, I can’t say. But I guess he didn’t find what he was looking for there. Straightening, he tossed me the drain stopper and walked out without a word.
