HER SWEETEST DOWNFALL
by Rebecca Hamilton
Night crept over Damascus. After treating the rapidly warming serpent mark with more Cruor blood, Ophelia spun toward the open door. Ethan sat between the frame, his strong shoulders resting back, his face turned to the field where a small red fox burrowed in the dirt. The night breeze wisped through his hair. She set the blankets on the end of the bed and walked over.
“Is it far?” she asked.
“No.” He cleared his throat but didn’t look up at her. “Sorry. For a human, it’s very far, but it won’t be for us.”
Ophelia bunched her fingers together in front of her stomach. “Same as we got ‘ere then?”
“Yes.”
She stepped around, outside, and kneeled in the grass across from him, resting her hands in her lap. “Ethan, if something is wrong . . . ”
“I’d tell you,” he replied, lifting his gaze from a long piece of grass he’d been slipping between his fingers. Moonlight paled his tan complexion and darkened the shade of his jaw, making him appear more defeated than he had hours ago.
“The Cruor I mentioned earlier is in the Americas. She’s not expecting us.”
“But I thought—”
“Please trust me.” He stood and dusted off his pants, then leaned his shoulder against the doorjamb.
She tried for a smile and busied herself attempting to prop up a wildflower that was wilting among the yellow grass.
When she looked up, Ethan’s expression was gentle. His gaze moved from the small flower to her eyes. There was a brief moment where she wondered if he, like Lady Karina, found her bright, ice-blue eyes alarming. But his express was soft, and her fears quickly melted. He walked behind her, crouched down, and covered her hand with his, his fingertips touching the flower. It revived before her very eyes, and Ophelia leaned her head against Ethan’s shoulder as she stared at the flower in awe.
“Beautiful,” she whispered, wishing she had been destined to be one of the Ankou—to be one of the elementals who revived life and put an end to evil, rather than bring death.
She told him as much.
He sat back, and she turned around to face him. He was standing now, holding his hand out to her.
“Come with me,” he said.
He took her hand and they fell through darkness just as they had when he’d taken her to the cabin. When she could see again, her stomach suddenly jolted. She hunched forward, heaving, but this time she did not vomit. She held her midsection until the feeling passed, then dried the moisture from her eyes.
Ethan smoothed his hand across her shoulder blades. “Traveling will get easier with time. By your third or fourth time you shouldn’t feel anything.”
“Why does this keep happening?” she demanded. She could hardly think straight.
“When we travel this way, we are in the in-between. You are suspended from such things as time and space and then thrust immediately back into it. Your system is forced to catch up instantly on arrival. If not for the magic the Ankou are granted, it could kill you.”
Ophelia sighed, nodding. “Where are we?”
Ethan turned her toward a small house and pressed his fingers to his lips.
He led her along the outer walls of the house until they reached a window. Inside, a man and a woman held each other, crying. Ophelia peered around the room, trying to make sense of what she was searching for. She found her answer on the floor. A young man sat, collapsed to his knees, covered in blood.
“What ‘appened?” Ophelia whispered.
“The young man just watched his comrades kill his sister.” Ethan’s voice was tight and his tone clipped. “He was unable to act to save her. He’s returned home to tell their parents.”
Ophelia backed away, shaking her head. When Ethan approached, she pounded her fist against his chest. “Why would ye show me such a thing?”
Ethan didn’t move, even as Ophelia tried once again to push him away. “The young girl who lost her life was a dual-breed. She was only killed because of what she is, and for no greater reason. This . . . this is what we’re fighting for. It is not that I want you in harm’s way, or that I wish for you to become a creature you detest. If I could do this for you, protect you from your calling, I would. But I cannot let my feelings for you sway our responsibility. I am confident you are capable, that you can do this to save the innocents in this world.”
Though Ophelia tried, she could not summon a response. She covered her mouth with hand, her entire body trembling. Could she live with herself, knowing all this, if she didn’t try to help?

Just a Little Series: Parts 1-4 (Just a Little, #1-4)
Just a Little Series (1-4) by Tracie Puckett
Publication Date: December 4th 2012
Genre: Young Adult Contemporary Romance
Goodreads

~Summary~

A complete compilation of the Just a Little Series novelettes: Just a Little Crush, Just a Little Embrace, Just a Little Sincerity, and Just a Little Promise.

JUST A LITTLE CRUSH

When a class assignment requires seventeen-year-old Julie to shadow someone on the job, she's overwhelmed by the decisions she'll have to make. After all, she has no clue what she wants from life post-graduation. So when her Uncle Charlie, Oakland's Chief of Police, suggests Julie fulfill her twenty hours of required job shadowing at the local police department, she's thrilled at his solution. Thinking she'll spend her days filing paperwork behind a desk, she finds herself quickly agreeing to his proposition. But Julie's expectations are quickly turned upside down when she meets Luke, the young and handsome (albeit somewhat stubborn) officer she's assigned to shadow on patrol.

With every hour she logs with Luke at the wheel, her feelings stir deeper, and Julie can't help but wonder if what she's feeling has developed into more than just a little crush.

JUST A LITTLE EMBRACE

Gone are the days of police patrol. With ten hours to go before completing her job shadowing project, seventeen-year-old Julie Little's assignment has switched gears, and now she's required to start living the lifestyle of every man (and woman) in uniform. Under Luke's command, Julie is obligated to complete her remaining hours through early morning exercise training. And despite her distaste for physical exertion, Julie's crush on her mentor continues to grow by leaps and bounds with each passing day. And just when she's certain that she's making progress in her relationship with Luke, Julie learns that the new guy in town has taken an interest in winning her heart... and as far as she's concerned, there's only room in her heart for one man... even if he still hasn't figured out that they're meant to be.

JUST A LITTLE SINCERITY

Plans for the Oakland Fall Ball are officially underway, and it's up to seventeen-year-old Julie Little to pull off a night her classmates will never forget. But with the recent tragedies that have torn through her life, Julie can't stay focused on the task at hand. With the added stress of the dance, family, and fragile friendships, she continues to struggle with the pain that comes with love and loss. And with the fate of her love life hanging in the balance, a close friend finally lays it all on the line; Julie will never be happy... until she finally lets Luke go....

JUST A LITTLE PROMISE

In the beginning, all she wanted was a sense of direction. Now, she's fighting in the name of love.

Seventeen-year-old Julie Little is under constant scrutiny. Try as she might, she can't make a single move without her uncle's permission--and Charlie will stop at nothing to keep her from Luke (even if that means putting her behind bars for an hour or two). But Charlie's overbearing behavior is the least of her worries. Derek is consumed with guilt. Luke is struggling to overcome his past. And Julie is on a die-hard mission to change things that are completely out of her control... even if that means betraying the man she loves.

I'm like addicted to this series! They're short stories that can be read in no time, a reason why I'm so addicted haha. I've read the first three and will be moving onto the forth soon. I've reviewed Just a Little Crush & Just a Little Embrace, next week I'll be reviewing Just a Little Sincerity.

Last year I downloaded Just a Little Crush for free and I stumbled upon it while going through my Kindle books in search of something to fix my cravings on New Adult Contemporary Romance. Though this is Young Adult I feel the main gal, Julie, is pretty mature for her age (I don't mind YA but sometimes I think the main characters are a bit too naïve *shrugs*). Once I finished it, I was dying to know if the second one might be free. And instead of finding out that the next one was free, I discovered that the next three in the series were free too! So I grabbed the box set and went to town haha. Enjoy! ;)

~Summary~

Gone are the days of police patrol. ~My Thoughts~

In Just a Little Embrace Luke show's he has mix feelings towards Julie. He has a war with himself and it's easy to see that Julie has caught his interest but he knows that he shouldn't cross that line. Yet Julie won't let him walk away so easily and I don't blame her, he's confusing her and boys can be annoying that way. So she's constantly trying to figure out if he's into her or not.

Along the way, new neighbors have moved in and we find out their history falls into Julies past. When I found out my jaw dropped and that twist gave this book such an amazing tone, so much depth, I couldn't stop reading! Julie knew there was something fishy when the sister (of the neighbors) was all over her cousin Matt, in just a matter of seconds.

Now I like this new element in the storyline, however, it brings another boy in Julies life....So commence love triangle....Though Julie's heart is only for one man and she's willing to fight for him no matter how hard he tries to push away. But that new boy is going to try to win her heart anyway and sometimes it gets tiring when you fall in love with one guy and then the author brings in another and you're like, come on! haha

But overall I really enjoyed this! And oh my god, that ending tho! I was dying to find out after it ended like that!! Definitely have you on the edge of your seat! If I didn't have the third installment I would have seriously died after reading that cliffhanger! Seriously!

Ashley's Review: Ever After Drake (The McCain Saga #1) by Keary Taylor

Ever After Drake (The McCain Saga, #2)
Ever After Drake (The McCain Saga #1) by Keary Taylor
Publication Date: July 15th 2014
Genre: New Adult Contemporary Romance
Pages: 185
Format: Kindle
Source: Bought
Read: August 07 to 09, 2014

~Summary~

It was my first day as a brand new high school teacher. But I got dumped that morning. Via text. And then one of my students hit on me. And the rest of the day was a complete mess. The beautifully single Mr. Drake McCain found me in my classroom, feeling sorry for myself. And not sixty seconds later he had me laughing and electricity racing through my blood.

My family is broken and complicated. I literally don’t know my biological father’s name. My mother is absent and my half-brother barely knows who she is. But Drake? He’s not complicated. He’s sweet and kind and insanely adorable, and comes from a wonderful family. He is everything I want.

The chemistry between us? It’s there in spades. I keep telling myself that I should be feeling really awful and depressed since I just got dumped a few days ago. But I keep getting this ridiculous smile on my face every time Drake is around and it’s kind of hard to keep telling myself that.

I’m Kaylee Ray. I believe in fairy tales and happily ever after’s, and maybe the search for Prince Charming is over.

Cue reality check.

*All books in The McCain Saga may be read independently. This is a family saga and each book is about a different sibling. The following are listed from oldest to youngest sibling.
EVER AFTER DRAKE
MOMENTS OF JULIAN
Untitled-LAKE (Fall 2014)
Untitled-KALE (Winter 2014)*

~My Thoughts~

I couldn't help myself, it was .99 cents at the time, and I just had to have more of the McCain's! So jumping right back into this world the beginning was cute, charming, and romantically sweet! Though I couldn't connect with Kaylee right away. How she could fall in and out of love so easily and moving onto the next guy without a problem blew my mind, especially when later on in the book she said she hasn't been in many serious relationships. Yet, in the beginning, that's not how her personality portrayed her. So, sometimes I was confused about Kaylee.

And as I was reaching the halfway point of the book I was wondering when we were going to get to the deeper, emotional stuff of the story. Mrs. Taylor has a saying for this series something like "It's hard to love a McCain" yet it seemed pretty easy for Kaylee. It was so perfect, cheery, and exactly the kind of fairy tale Kaylee wanted that I didn't know where this book was going. It seemed too easy and maybe that was the point.

Once I started to question this, we finally got slapped in the face, punched in the stomach, and having the rug beneath our feet get ripped right from under us. First Drake's ex comes into the picture and she's got a bomb to drop on him. When Kaylee finds out what it is she makes the desicion to step away. She didn't want to break up a family that could be and she knows how it feels not to know her own father. Her mother at a young age had a one night stand and ended up with a bun in her oven.

So when Kaylee steps away, her best friend tells her to take this time to find herself, instead of always looking for Prince Charming. That's when she gets the idea to look for her father. This leads her to another side of the story and show's her that maybe if things worked out differently she could have had the family she always wanted. But things happen for a reason and she's just happy to learn the truth.

As she was finding herself, her mother was trying to become more in her life again. And when hope blooms something gets in the way and the emotional roller coaster begins. And oh my god, Mrs. Taylor kept writing heart breaking things that pulled at my heart strings and my jaw kept dropping every word I read. This is when I started to bond with Kaylee because you can't help but feel sympathy towards her. Life finally screwed her and Drake over and all at once too. But I'm glad that they had each other when they really needed someone.

Overall this was an amazing read and Mrs. Taylor sure knows how to rip the rug right from under our feet! If you like New Adult Contemporary Romances with depth and heartache but with a fairy tale ending then this book is for you! And that ending, oh my god, Kaylee finally got her Prince Charming and was it ever full of the charms! This'll put a smile on your face with it's heart felt, family crazy but loving story. Oh the McCain boys! Everytime Lake came into the scene a goofy smile came to my face and Kale was ever the adorableness! Sage is still the kick ass female she is and I did miss reading behind her eyes but I'm glad we get a taste of every McCain sibling. I can't wait for Depths of Lake to come out next month! It's definitely a must buy for me!

~My Thoughts~

Looking for something to quench my craving for New Adult Contemporary Romances I was strolling through my kindle books and found this little gem! Though it's a Young Adult novelette, the main character Julie was mature enough to make me feel as if I wasn't reading a young adult story. Sometimes I just don't like how naïve they can be. And Julie sure had brains and a back bone, surely keeping me interested.

Though being only 87 pages, Mrs. Puckett sure knows how to build a story, bring some depth, and pace it all just right. Throughout the story nothing felt forced and everything felt completely natural as our two leading characters started to developed Just a Little Crush for each other.

This was such a cute, funny read with a gut grabbing depth to it. The concept interests you but it's Mrs. Puckett's words and storytelling that hooks the readers. I absolutely loved the build up and when I found out the box set (1-4) is free on Amazon I downloaded it immediately and started on the sequel, Just a Little Embrace, because at the end of this I was craving for more!
