~My Thoughts~

 

I originally picked this up to read earlier this year but it was late at night and the next day I just didn't pick it back up to continue with chapter two (I've started that kind of bad habit, start a book but not continuing with it). But I was looking for a fresh read and looking at my (not) shrinking TBR pile guilt swam in me with all my unread books just sitting there (for years) so I decided to give this bad girl another try.

 

I honestly don't know why it took me so long to read/pick this one up again! It wasn't perfect by all means but it satisfied me. One of the things that got a little annoying was Gwen constantly running into Logan, typical in young adult paranormals, but it was refreshing when the storyline wasn't surrounded around the romance. It was completely focused on Gwen solving the murder of one of her classmates, Jasmine. Gwen was working late at the library and ended up finding Jasmine dead on the floor. The first thing she does is runs towards her to help her, even though it's clear Jasmine is dead. This is the beginning that'll lead Gwen into finding her purpose in life.

 

Gwen has a lot of guilt in her, blaming herself for her mothers death. At first I didn't get why she felt all this guilt, not completely even though it's obvious why and it wasn't something she should have blamed herself for, but by the ending I understood. She didn't have to pick up that hairbrush and "see" what was going on in her ex-schoolmates home but she wanted to, she wanted to know the secret behind the girls hesitant eyes and it ended up getting Gwen into trouble. Whenever Gwen starts talking about that day and night, it's intense, especially what she "saw". Though I even got a little uncomfortable myself with it sometimes, it made this storyline unique and it pulled me in. I feel like there was a lot of things that made this read unique, made it feel like the author was pushing a few boundaries and she was, I loved it! She wasn't afraid to shy away from certain things teens do, things that parents want to hide or deny, like sex. Though she doesn't get graphic, she just doesn't sugar coat the action young adults take sometimes either, it was quite refreshing! You don't see that a lot in young adult books.

 

I honestly feel like this was a refreshing read for me! I liked how Gwen was going to school with a bunch of mythical warriors yet she didn't believe all the stories and what she was learning in this weird private school until she started to truly see it with her own eyes. Truly see that there was an evil out to get them and see that Loki was trying to be set free. I was actually quite surprised that this was about Greek Gods and what not, I didn't see that coming by the summary. It was a nice little twist to this!

 

Overall Touch of Frost instantly hooked me! All I wanted to do was read this book and nothing else, I just wanted to get lost in the story! I've got to say Gwen's story is unique and refreshing, makes me want to read the rest of my young adult books! Though I know from other reviewers they got annoyed with everyone calling Gwen "The Gypsy Girl" or just the author constantly saying "Gypsy" in reference to her gift (I understand why, because it's a constant thing and I felt we were being constantly reminded about things that was previously said *rolls eyes*) however they think it's the author's way of calling her a Romani girl but in truth it has nothing to do with her heritage, we don't even know if she's Romani. It's just what her family calls these physic gifts that was brought upon them, you'll learn the real reason why as you get deeper into the story, so stick through it, it's absolutely worth the read!

 

Also, I wasn't real surprised when we found out who was behind all the disturbances at the school but I was still sitting on the edge of my seat, waiting to see where this would go! Even though with everything tying up nicely at the end I'm still looking forward to continuing this series! I'm definitely intrigued of where Mrs. Estep is going to take Gwen next!

 

Touch of Frost is action packed, full of interesting characters, and one that changes up a little bit in the young adult paranormal formula! It was quite refreshing for me!

At the most swank eatery until le Diplomate a few blocks up, they passed an outcropping of glass framed in thick rustic metal and then turned right. Through the concrete entrance the hostess’s practiced hands ushered them across the stone floor to their waiting friends.

            “Rin!” Jen squealed, hopping from her smooth wooden chair. “Get out. I freaking love your hair. And that dress. Oh my God, are those Choo’s?” The exuberant brunette fanned herself with Barcelona’s extensive drink menu.

            The crowd around them didn’t skip a beat, caught in the din of their own merriment. This place did that and Rin was ready for some indulgence of her own.

            “Perfect timing.” Zack’s green eyes shifted behind her, toward the kitchen.

            Jen’s breath caught and she leaned to the side, peering around the outfit she’d just gushed over. “Forget your Choo’s and get a load of our waiter. Please be our waiter. Please be our waiter.”

            “They’re called servers,” Gregory chimed with his charismatically crooked grin. He stood, leaned forward, and planted a big one square on Rin’s lips. She released Nate and wrapped Gregory in a fierce hug. “And these days they tend to sue when ogled too forcibly. So, no groping.” He winked and set her back next to Nate.

            “Lawyers,” Rin mirrored her best friend’s lopsided grin. “Always spoil the fun.”

            She and Nate laughed for the first time since the text, but none of their friends noticed. They all stared in unabashed awe at the person coming to take their order.

            “I’m ready to pick a team and erect my flag in the dirt. This guy seals the deal. Gay all the way. Sorry, ladies, but this nugget of manliness has finally made a decision.” Gregory smoothed his hand over the cream cable-knit sweater that hid his leanly muscled physique.

            “Erect your flag or your dick? In the ground or our server?” Jen asked. “I have zero qualms about calling him a server because I’d let him service me any day.”

            “I prefer the latter.” Gregory sat wide-eyed.

            “Something’s wrong with you two,” Zach announced.

            “But I don’t see you looking away,” Nate noted. “And I hope y’all know what you want to drink. Jen and Greg, your prayers are answered in three, two…”

            Rin couldn’t get over her friends’ reaction to this guy enough to turn and look for herself. She needed this camaraderie to ease the sting of loneliness, even though Nate’s beefy hand wrapped securely around her upper arm. The realization of the superficiality of their relationship—crazy text or not—raised the curtain and left her standing on stage in nothing but her sparkling personality.

            “Evening, gentlemen. Ladies.” The silken honey of the unfamiliar voice coated her nakedness in a soothing balm. The waiter cleared his throat. The low rumble vibrated very near her ear. “What can I get you, miss?”

            She canted her head in his direction. Surprise smacked her square in the face.  Smoldering bedroom eyes gazed into hers. The crystal blue orbs pierced through a strong brow and straight into her soul. Rin stepped back, stumbling over Nate’s feet. A thud sounded her landing against her boyfriend’s hard chest.

            “Whoa, there,” the waiter said, maintaining an invisible grip on Rin that made it impossible to look away.

            Blond hair only a shade darker than her own sat in disarray across his forehead, but was shorn close around his ears. The hint of a beard hugged the strongest jaw she’d ever seen. Lips the perfect shape and fullness for hours and hours of kissing would have softened the blow his appearance delivered, if he’d only smile.

            “You startled me,” she said by way of explanation for her odd behavior.

            “Wasn’t my intention.” He said the words, but his head ticked to the side and his eyes flared in a way that opposed them.

            “What’s your name, gorgeous?” Jen asked.

            “Call me Luck,” the waiter said, holding Rin’s befuddled gaze.

            Nate steadied her and shifted to place himself between her and the…her and Luck, but a massive party of suits poured in to their left. They crowded the walkway with banter and briefcases. The man screwing with her head—more than her shrink ever had—could have stepped to the side of the table toward Zach. Instead, he stepped forward, crowding her with his sharply muscled chest tucked neatly into a waiter’s white button down. Chiseled forearms and lightly sun-kissed skin shown at his rolled sleeves.

            Whether someone shoved him or he took a dive she wasn’t sure, but his sinewy chest suddenly plastered her front. One arm wrapped around her waist, catching her in a subtle dip. His other shot out to the chair back to steady them. She swore she heard Gregory moan. Luck’s muscles in action did something sinful to her psyche.

            “Jackass, I’m not into threesomes,” Nate blustered just behind her head. She’d see him, if she’d tear her gaze off Luck. But she couldn’t.

            Luck lifted his heavy blue gaze from her for the first time and squared it on Nate. “Me neither.”

It's my Birthday!

 

I honestly can't believe another year has gone by! Today is my birthday and it doesn't really feel like it, like I just turned 22. With my family we don't do big parties and cakes as we get older, I haven't had a party in like years! Like middle school haha. Which is why I'm excited for next year when I'll be celebrating with my husband (we're getting hitched January 3rd) and I can't wait to go all out for him too, he's not used to that as he never grew up with birthday parties so I can't wait to spoil him!

 

Anyways, last week was total bliss! Came home late last night and I absolutely didn't want to go to sleep because I would be waking up without him.....Wednesday we got our marriage license, you have no idea how amazing I felt writing down my new last name!, and got our apartment reserved. We'll be moving in January 7th and I'm so excited because my heart is down in Socal with him and I can't wait to start our lives together!

 

So, right now this is just another birthday. My mind is too busy trying not to stress as I get all the last minute details done for our big day, as I wait in excitement to pick him up one last time at the airport in 27 days, and as I begin to pack up for the next chapter of my life!
