“I love a great mystery that keeps my interest and keeps the pages turning. I loved the Hawaiian setting, that was a character on its own. The Letting (The Letting #1) by Cathrine Goldstein

Genre: Young Adult Dystopia
Pages: 335
Format: Paperback
Source: Author
Read: February 17th to 22nd, 2016
Rating: 5/5

~Summary~

What if the Devil doesn’t know he’s the Devil?

This is the question Veronica “Ronnie” Billings poses to Phoenix, her sworn enemy, the leader of the Peaceful Revolution, and the one she loves.

Kidnapped by Phoenix’s rebels, Ronnie learns how wrong she has been. She had no idea that her patriotism was wasted on a corrupt government. Ronnie was proud to be a Leader; taking hundreds of harvested girls to the Letting facility. After all, she was saving them from future Couplings and bringing them to the safety of the New World. Or so she thought…

Confused, Ronnie realizes the only way to discover the truth is to trust her heart. Together, Phoenix and Ronnie devise a plan to stop their corrupt government and preempt the dangerous rebel coup which is approaching. But when their plan goes awry, will Ronnie be strong enough to save Phoenix, her country, and herself?

~My Thoughts~

I haven't read a Dystopian in a long time so this was quite refreshing from my previous reads! The Letting is gripping, intense, and fast-paced! The story moves along quickly and in a matter of pages Ronnie is kidnapped by a small group of rebels. Here we find out how truly corrupt the government is in trying to stay young forever and Ronnie sees all the wrong she's done by helping bring the young girls to them.

I knew what the letting meant in this world but why they were doing this to these young girls, I didn't understand why. When the truth came out I was sitting on the edge of my seat, not being able to turn the pages fast enough! Absolutely an intense moment and where I got to see how truly sick the government was! Though at this moment a piece of the story fell into place and I was dying to get to the moment where Ronnie was going to learn the truth behind this one object her mother was so adamant about. Of course she didn't figure it out till halfway through the book but I let it slide because there was so much going on, she didn't have time to stop to breathe!

Even I had to set it down so I could take a breather haha. This book is action packed, full of heart pumping scenes and full of twist and turns that I didn't see where this was going! I like books where you can't see the ending, it keeps you on your toes! And once I got to the last page I was dying to get my hands on the next book!

Overall I truly, truly enjoyed this and I'm excited to see where things go in the sequel! Just wow, beautifully written, I couldn't get enough! And the truth about the government warmed this horror lovers heart, definitely a refreshing read!

Her past will soon catch up with her. She will be forced to decide.
Big brother’s best friend or the hurtful memories of her past in Paris.

~EXCERPT~

Jillian sat down on his plush new sofa and said, “Your apartment is really nice. Did you decorate it yourself?”
He nodded. “I did. I’d much rather have what I like on the walls than what some decorator tells me I should have.”
“Me too,” she said, honestly. “You have a great eye for colors and space…what is it you do for a living?”
“I’m into fashion like you,” he said, taking a seat on the other side of her. He was less than three feet away now and she was alone in his apartment. That wouldn’t be so bad if she didn’t keep picturing herself locking lips with him. She hoped that he couldn’t see her sweat as her internal temperature continued to rise. He didn’t say any more about his job so she said,
“So you bought the Galvan in Paris. Was that your first trip there?”
“No, I’ve been there a lot. I love it there…just the atmosphere and all of the culture.”
Jillian remembered saying that exact thing to Maddy a couple of weeks ago. She was realizing that she and Jude actually seemed to have a lot in common. “So do I,” she said. “I saw so many great art and fashion shows while I was there.”
“Did you get to be there for fashion week?”
“I did! I got to see a show at the Carrousel du Louvre!”
“I was at that one. It was great!”
Jillian found herself wishing she would have met him then. Maybe she would have never met the other man that she’d spent her summer with and left broken-hearted. They talked for half an hour about the fashions coming out this year and she asked him about his family.
“My father passed away a few years ago. It’s just me and my mom now. I’m an only child.”
“Oh, I’m not sure what I would have done without Ethan.”
“Where is that brother of ours?” he asked with a wink.
“He’s in Las Vegas…Sin City for three weeks.”
“Uh oh, look out!”
She laughed. “And that is as much of my brother’s exploits that I want to discuss.” She sat her empty glass down and stood up. “Thank you for the drink Jude, and the conversation. I should take off…”
“So soon?” He stood too and gave her a hot, smoldering look that ignited the fire in her belly.
She was suddenly burning up from the inside out. She had to go…or she wasn’t going to. She smiled and stepped past him. She felt him right behind her as she reached for the door handle.
“Jillian…” his voice was deep and sexy and she knew turning towards him was going to be a mistake…but she did it anyways. As soon as she did his lips met hers and he nudged her back against the wall. She parted her lips and he pressed one hand into the wall and wrapped the other around her waist and pulled her into his hard body as he let his warm, wet tongue snake into her mouth. The taste and the feel of him was intoxicating and before long her own hands were feeling the hard flesh of his back and sliding around to trace the outline of his chest muscles underneath his shirt. She felt him lifting her skirt up and something in her brain was telling her to stop him…but her body was in charge at the moment.
He touched the crotch of her thong and her body exploded in a gush of warm fluid and chills that ran up and down her spine. He rubbed her through her panties and she couldn’t bring herself to tell him to stop. It felt so good and she wanted him so bad…when his fingers slid underneath the elastic and made contact with her hot flesh, her head felt like it exploded. He slid the hand on the wall down and gripped her ass with it as he used his fingers to pleasure her.
The whole time his tongue wrestled with hers and explored every curve and crevice of her mouth. It didn’t take long before her body was shaking and she was crying out in ecstasy as the orgasm washed over her in wave after wave of pure bliss. Jude waited for her to stop shaking before pulling his hand back and moving his mouth over to the side of her face next to her ear, “I need to see you again,” he whispered in a strangled voice.
Jillian couldn’t stop shaking. She wasn’t even sure her legs would carry her across the hall. In a voice she hardly recognized she said, “I have to go.” She turned the door handle behind her and Jude took a step back and watched her go. The desire she saw on his face burned through her like a hot poker. Who the hell is this man?

No rest for the Wiccan.

One year has passed since Zoë Delante’s last big case, and everyone’s favorite Wiccan has managed to carve a normal-ish life for herself and her boyfriends, Jacob and Daniel. Then she gets the call that someone has discarded dead babies like empty soda cans off I-295 in the Baltimore/D.C. area, leaving strange scales all over the crime scenes. Another serial killer?

Zoë dives into the case when her one-year-old niece comes up missing, and she discovers that the guy running the Church of Holy Light knows magick and lies about it. Is he the one behind the mind control? Did he send the guys to drop magick all over her sister’s house?

And what the hell is up with her magick?

The visions are getting stronger, and weirder, and Zoë can’t remember the last time she slept. No matter. She has bad guys to catch and innocents to save. She’ll sleep when she’s dead….

…Or when the killer is.

Born in 1975, I’m the product of star-crossed lovers who took separate paths shortly after my arrival. Now a three-time mother, twice married woman, and eclectic person, I reside in the sunny biosphere that is Sierra Vista, Arizona, with my wonderful partner in crime, Peter, and three brilliant geeklings: Michael, Cami and Desmond. Oh, and a mop… er… Shih Tzu named Sir Lancelot the Brave.

Writing came to me naturally, and the dark clouds of childhood and adolescent angst gave birth to a myriad of story threads that reflected my inner struggle to find a place in this world. I haven’t quite discovered it yet, but I’ve fallen in love with the journey and all the stories unfolding in front of me. I’m a lover of many genres and a writer of a small handful, and rather content with that lot.

Reread Book Review: You are So Undead To Me (Megan Berry #1) by Stacey Jay

You are So Undead To Me (Megan Berry #1) by Stacey Jay
Publication Date: November 9th, 2015
Genre: Young Adult Paranormal Romance
Pages: 72
Format: ebook
Source: Free on Amazon
Reread: February 15th, 2016
Rating: 5/5

~Summary~

Q: HOW MANY ZOMBIES DOES IT TAKE TO RUIN A SOCIAL LIFE?

A: NOT MANY.

Megan Berry is a Zombie Settler by birth, which means she's destined to play part-time shrink to a bunch of dead people with killer issues. All Megan really wants is to go to homecoming, but with her powers out of control and everyone from the Mean Girl Next Door to her mom to the Cutest Boy in the World on her case, it's kinda hard to score a date.

(Let's just say Megan's love life could use some major resuscitation.)

She's convinced her sophomore year can't get any worse - until someone starts using black magic to turn average, angsty Undead into scary, hardcore flesh-eating Zombies. Now she'll have to rise to the challenge of kicking Undead butt (while fighting a serious crush on Ethan, who truly may be THE cutest boy in the world).

Her life - and more importantly, the fate of the homecoming dance - depends on it.

Alert: YOU ARE SO UNDEAD TO ME was previously published in 2009 as a full-length title. This heavily revised second edition is told in SERIAL format with CLIFFHANGER endings.

~My Thoughts~

This was originally published as a full-length novel which I have sitting on my bookshelf. I've been craving a reread but when I noticed since then Mrs. Jay got her rights back, heavily edited it (trust me I checked) and republished it in a serial series. Though it's minor changes- just knowing there is a second edition to the full-length novel I just had to get it. I mean, what if she changed something? haha. It would just feel a little weird knowing there's an edited one out there (not that I felt like the original needed it but over time our writing style changes so I understand why she did it).

Anyways, the first in the serial is free and I devoured it! It brought back that amazing feeling I had while reading it the first time and I still love it after all these years! What I loved most about this book was the concept of Zombie Settlers, it's what hooked me then and still does today! It's a unique concept, not done before (at least that I know off) and it's such a refreshing tale in the zombie genre!

Though don't pick this up if you don't like cutesy teen books. I love that aspect and I love how balanced it is with Megan trying to live a normal life but is constantly getting sucked into her destiny as a Zombie Settler. It definitely keeps readers on their toes!

Overall I enjoyed this as much as I did back then, maybe a little more with the new references like The Walking Dead! I loved the action, kept me turning the pages and the humor had me laughing. I knew this story was going to suck me back in and the next day I bought the rest of the series, dying to devour this book again! This is still one of my all time favorite teen zombie books and I cannot wait to reread the rest of this serial!
