Movie Review: Northpole

Northpole (2014)

Starring: Tiffani Thiessen, Josh Hopkins, Bailee Madison, Max Charles
Directed By: Douglas Barr
Release Day: November 14th, 2014

~Summary~

Northpole, the magical home to Santa & Mrs. Claus, has grown into a huge city powered by the magic of holiday happiness around the world. Yet as people everywhere get too busy to enjoy festive time together, the city is in trouble. Who can help save the cherished traditions of Christmas? One young boy, Kevin, might have a chance if he can convince his protective mom, Chelsea, to rediscover the magic of the season. With a little added help from Kevin's charming teacher Ryan, a mysterious elf-like girl Clementine (Madison) and a gospel singer named Josephine, Kevin is determined to bring his mom in on the fun and prove that one small voice can change the hearts of many.

~My Thoughts~

I finally took the time to sit down and watch this! I don't know why but I love Christmas movies just a little bit more when their story involves Santa Claus, it makes it that much more magical! I absolutely loved the unique elements in Douglas Barr's take of the Northpole. I loved how the Christmas spirit in us creates sparks that fly up and creates magic snow in the Northpole, it's how they make the toys- creating a cycle of happiness. I thought that was brilliant and truly brought the charm to this movie.

I really enjoyed this! I loved watching Kevin try to bring Christmas cheer to the new town him and his mother moved to. Along the way he comes in contact with an elf from the Northpole, Clementine. These two work hard to bring back the canceled towns Christmas Tree lighting and some moves end up with Kevin getting into trouble but I'm happy that he continued to stand up for his want to spread Christmas cheer, even standing up to his mom who doesn't believe that Clementine even exists. Once the mother found out she was real and an elf, it was awesome watching her jaw drop in shock. Yeah, wished you weren't so hard on your son now, don't you?

I liked watching the mothers character develop. She's the serious type, doesn't trust other people lightly, a skeptic because being a reporter has changed her to be. So it was nice to see her change from that and become a little bit more open-minded.

Overall this was another sweet, fun, and magical movie from Hallmark channel! It's definitely one I wouldn't mind watching again as it's more than a romance. It's about a boy that wants to spread holiday cheer, who isn't just ready to let go of the magic and who doesn't love watching inspiring movies like that?

Book Review: The Truth Spell (Werewolf High #1) by Anita Oh

The Truth Spell (Werewolf High Book #1) by Anita Oh
Publication Date: November 21st, 2015
Genre: Young Adult Paranormal
Pages: 128
Format: ebook
Source: Author
Read: December 15th to 17th, 2015

~Summary~

As soon as I stepped onto the grounds of Amaris High, I knew I'd made a big mistake. I could never fit in at such a snobbish school – I was more IT girl than "it girl". But then I saw him.

Sam Spencer. My childhood best friend. But it couldn't be. Sam Spencer had died three years ago, on the night that changed everything. I need to know what happened, why he's suddenly not dead and is hanging out with a bunch of rich kids.

When the school is hit by a truth spell, it seems like the perfect chance to find out what Sam and his creepy new friends are hiding, but the weirder things get, the less I'm sure I want to know. Even for Sam, even for the free food, Amaris High might be more trouble than it's worth.

~My Thoughts~

That was awesome! Honestly, I thought this might be a little cliche (and I'm sure there are small subtle ones) but I was still sucked in by the uniqueness in the blurb so I just had to read it. I'm so glad I picked this book up! The moment I received it in my email, I couldn't stop thinking about it and I had to pick it up! Thank you YA Bound Book Tours for sending me a copy!

I was hooked from the very beginning! I was dying to know the secret behind Lucy's "supposedly" dead best friend and how he's alive all of a sudden. I was dying to also know what happened that night he died and ohmigosh, what a gruesome scene Lucy had to watch that night. I felt so bad while she watched it all go down, the feels!

"You're always complaining that your butt looks big, but I don’t see you swapping out those Doritos for a salad,” I heard a girl say as I passed the door to the house kitchen.

“Didn’t hear your boyfriend complaining when he was grabbing it in the common room last night,” said the other girl.

Oh my, when the truth spell hit this became even more funnier and I didn't even think that was possible! I loved when it hit, things changed drastically and I didn't expect it going as far as the students getting sick because they're holding their tongues- loved this element! And Lucy, I loved how she sent in food, water, and even blood samples in to get tested because she couldn't believe that it might be magic. I loved how logically she was because that's how I would react and how most people would react. Her actions felt so real that this story was absolutely refreshing!

I loved (can't help but say this word because it's true) Lucy's character! It was easy to connect to her and it's awesome she's this tech geek but still knows how to STAND UP for herself!! Loved, loved, loved!! Throw shade at her all you want Golden students but don't expect her to cry because she isn't going to let a bunch of punks like you stop her from getting a better education.

Overall, though I wished we knew who the culprit was, I loved all the twist and turns! I'm so excited for the next book and so happy I only have to wait a couple of months as it's coming out in February! Also, there's so much unexpectedness that goes on in this book that my jaw dropped a couple of times and this book had me sitting on the edge of my seat! Though this is a novella the story line didn't feel rushed and it felt like a whole novel, loved it!

*Was given a copy from the author in exchange for my honest review*

Here's a few quotes I loved-

"He is like, if Hitler had a baby with Voldemort, that baby would be like, ‘Hold up there, buddy, keep me away from this guy. He is too evil for me."

"He’s basically Professor Snape,” said Hannah, later on when we were gathered in the common room. “Without the sex appeal."

He shrugged and started walking toward the forest. “Even if you made it back to your commoner town, you’d die of boredom once you got there. Every night you’d cry into your pillow, ‘woe for a life without Nikolai,’ until you perished of a broken heart.”

About Mia

Born a Connecticut Yankee in nobody's court, Mia Darien grew up to brave snow and talk fast. She started reading when she was three and never looked back, soon frequently falling asleep with a book under her cheek. (Something she still does, though these days it’s her Nook as often as a paperback.)

At eleven, she discovered Night Mare by Piers Anthony and entered the world of grown-up fantasy fiction and it was all over from there. She started writing at fourteen, then met vampires as a teenager and the concept for what would become Adelheid was soon born. Epic fantasy remains her first love, but she enjoys writing whatever stories come to mind in any genre.

Now she loves both writing and helping her indie community with her freelancing. A geek till the end, she enjoys role-play by email games and World of Warcraft when she has the time. Married to her very own Named Man of the North, she lives with him, their mini-tank (also known as their son) and pets, who usually act more childish than the child.

She is the author of the urban fantasy series Adelheid, and several anthologies for charity. You can find her at her website, or the following social media.

Book Review: Into the Darkness (Darkness Falls #1) by Kira Adams

Into the Darkness (Darkness Falls #1) by Kira Adams
Publication Date: November 13th, 2014
Genre: Adult Horror
Pages: 199
Format: ebook
Source: Free on Amazon
Read: December 11th to 14th, 2014

~Summary~

It was supposed to be a way to end the devastation in the Middle East, but instead a darkness has been unleashed unlike anything the world has ever seen.

Ike Glass is well versed in chaos, but even he is unprepared for what the world will become after the outbreak. Ace Cullen has been loyal to his country ever since he was brought to the United States as a young boy, but it’s difficult to stand by a country that can’t even take responsibility for their own actions. Phoenix Blue just wants a night of mindless sex…is that too much to ask? Always a black sheep, she shocks everyone as she finds the strength inside herself to protect the ones she cares about and fight to see another day. They were strangers when the virus took over, but tragedy will bring them together in ways they never thought possible as they descend into the darkness.

~My Thoughts~

Oh boy, where should I start.....

This is an easy read and I was devouring it, however there was just too many issues in this for me. Starting with the pacing, it moves way too fast to even know how much time has gone by between scenes or chapters. The way it was written, one minute the virus breaks out and then the next paragraph one of the main characters escapes in a car and is already worrying that it might have spread to his family. Um, how? It just happened in this one building you were in and you escaped, how the heck could it reach your family already? Especially since it first broke out in Area 51 and you were there to see it.

The actions of characters and the scenes in the story just don't match, causing it to not flow right for me. Like when the outbreak finally reached the outside world and then the next chapter all of a sudden they're all badass and know how to survive in this zombie infested world. The transition just didn't feel right. Nothing in this book felt right.....

What definitely didn't feel right was the silly love triangle or the romance in general. It felt like Phoenix just met Cullen and didn't trust him and then the next paragraph they're having relationship drama.....Like, what?

You just met and now all of a sudden you have crazy feelings for each other. Phoenix was so hot and cold, one minute she's into him and the next she can't trust him and I'm like "But you just met each other two chapters ago! How the heck are you having relationship drama?".....it got to me as you can see....

Seriously, throughout I was trying to figure out how much time went by between chapters or even paragraphs. Transitioning between scenes was like whiplash, it never felt right and it annoyed me. I seriously feel like it needs to go through another round of edits just to fix the pacing problem.

Overall I was hoping for an awesome zombie read but instead I got.....well, it definitely wasn't awesome. I don't know what I was expecting, that summary tells nothing of the book but just how the characters feel and what they were like before the outbreak and the outbreak happens very early in the book, so yeah. Also, this became really repetitive once the virus happened and I couldn't help but roll my eyes. I also knew who the traitor was in the group so it bugged me that Phoenix didn't realize sooner, it was so obvious.

EXCERPT:

Dirt stains my hands, freezes my fingers. There are streaks of it all over my jeans, caking the sleeves of my coat.
“What the hell are you doing?”
My heart leaps into my throat and I whip around.
Sheriff Luke McCoy stands five yards behind me, hands on his hips, a look of confusion and horror on his face.
I don’t have an answer for him, so I go back to my task.
“Alivia.” I hear him walking toward me. “What are you doing, and why does it look like someone crawled out of that grave?”
“Because someone did,” I huff. My hands are numb now, making it difficult to maneuver the dirt. Thankfully, it’s still freshly turned enough that it’s not packed yet.
“And who might that have been?” he asks and his voice hardens with each syllable.
“Circumstances change people, you understand that, right?” I’ve got the hole half filled back in.
“What are you talking about?” Sheriff McCoy, now that he’s caught on to what this hole means and its implications, joins me in filling it.
“I told you a few months back that I was a good person. That I wanted nothing to do with the House.” My lungs burn from the effort of breathing hard in this cold air. “But circumstances change people.”
“What happened, Alivia?” he demands.

Mini Book Review: The Break (Playing Games #2.5) by Rene Folsom

The Break (Playing Games #2.5) by Rene Folsom
Publication Date: August 17th, 2015
Genre: Adult Contemporary Romance
Pages: 94
Format: ebook
Source: Author
Read: December 13th, 2015

~Summary~

Deciding on a much-needed break, Liam and Maci head for the Maldives, a series of islands in the middle of the Indian Ocean known for their endless beaches and romantic settings. They make a pact to keep disconnected from the world while enjoying their time together, including days full of fun in the sun and nights packed with passion.

Go on a trip with these two game-playing lovers as they spend two super-sexy weeks in paradise in The Break, an optional novella in the Playing Games series.

Note: This contemporary romance companion novella in the Playing Games series should be read between Game On and End Game and contains adult situations meant for ages 18+.

~My Thoughts~

This was a fun, hot optional novella. It was nice seeing Maci and Liam having fun together, especially after all they went through in Game On. They deserved the break and it was fun going on it with them. Since it's an optional novella, you don't have to read this before the third one comes out. If you love this series then definitely read it but it doesn't help move the story along for the third one. Again, it was just a fun short!

EXCERPT:

Underground Ward, the Radcliffe Lunatic Asylum, Oxford

The writing on the wall says it’s January 14. I am not sure what year. I haven’t been sure of many things lately, but I’m wondering if it’s my handwriting I’m looking at.

There is an exquisite-looking key drawn underneath the date. It’s carved with a sharp instrument, probably a broken mirror. I couldn’t have written this. I’m terrified of mirrors. They love to call it Catoptrophobia around here.

Unlike those of the regular patients in the asylum, my room is windowless, stripped down to a single mattress in the middle, a sink, and bucket for peeing—or puking—when necessary. The tiles on the floor are black and white squares, like a chessboard. I never step on black. Always white. Again, I’m not sure why.

The walls are smeared with a greasy, pale green everywhere. I wonder if it’s the previous patient’s brains spattered all over from shock therapy.

In the Radcliffe Lunatic Asylum, politely known as the Warneford Hospital, the doctors have a fondness for shock therapy. They love watching patients with bulging eyes and shivering limbs begging for relief from the electricity. It makes me question who is really mad here.

It’s been a while since I was sent to shock therapy myself. Dr. Tom Truckle, my supervising physician, said I don’t need it anymore, particularly after I stopped mentioning Wonderland. He told me that I used to talk about it all the time; a dangerous place I claim I had been whisked away to, when my elder sister lost me when I was seven.

Truth is, I don’t remember this Wonderland they are talking about. I don’t even know why I am here. My oldest vivid memory is from a week ago. Before that, it’s all a purple haze.

I have only one friend in this asylum. It’s not a doctor or a nurse. And it’s not a human. It doesn’t hate, envy, or point a finger at you. My friend is an orange flower I keep in a pot—a Tiger Lily I can’t live without. I keep it safe next to a small crack in the wall, where a single ray of sun sneaks through for only ten minutes a day. It might not be enough light to grow a flower, but my Tiger Lily is a tough girl.

Each day I save half of the water they give me for my flower. As for me, better thirsty than mad. My orange flower is also my personal rain check for my sanity. If I talk to her and she doesn’t reply, I know I am not hallucinating. If she talks back to me, all kinds of nonsense starts to happen. Insanity prevails. There must be a reason why I am here. It doesn’t mean I will easily give in to such a fate.
“Alice Pleasance Wonder. Are you ready?” The nurse knocks with her electric prod on my steel door. Her name is Waltraud Wagner. She is German. Everything she says sounds like a threat, and she smells like smoke. My fellow mad people say she is a Nazi—that she used to kill her own patients back in Germany. “Get avay vrom za dor. I’m coming in,” she demands.

As I listen to the rattling of her large keychain, my heart pounds in my chest. The turn of the key makes me want to swallow. When the door opens, all I can think of is choking her before she begins to hurt me. Sadly, her neck is too thick for my nimble hands. I stare at her almost-square figure for a moment. Everything about her is four sizes too big. All except her feet, which are as small as mine. My sympathies, little feet.

“Time for your daily ten-minute break upstairs.” She approaches me with a straitjacket, a devilish grin on her face. I never get out. My ward is underground, and I’m only allowed to take my break in another empty ward upstairs where patients love to play soccer.

A big, muscled warden stands behind Waltraud. Thomas Ogier. He is bald, and has an angry-red face and a silver tooth he likes to flash whenever he sees me. His biceps are the size of my head. I have a hard time believing he was ever a four-pound baby.

“Slide your arms into the jacket,” Waltraud demands in her German accent, a cigarette puckered between her lips. “Slow and easy, Alice.” She nods at Warden Ogier, in case I misbehave.

I comply obediently and stretch out my arms for her to do whatever she wants. Waltraud twists my right arm slightly and checks the tattoo on my arm. It’s the only tattoo I have. It’s a handwritten sentence that looks like a thick armband from afar. Waltraud feels the need to read it aloud: “‘I can’t go back to yesterday, because I was a different person then.'” I was told I had written it while still believing in Wonderland. “That Alice in Wonderland has really messed with your head,” she says as she puffs smoke into my face.

The tattoo and Waltraud’s mocking is the least of my concerns right now. I let her tie me up, and while she does, I close my eyes. I imagine I am a sixteenth-century princess, some kind of lucky Cinderella, being squeezed into a corset by my chain-smoking servant in a fairy tale castle above ground, just about to go meet my prince charming. Such imagery always helps me breathe. I once thought that it was hope that saved the day, not sanity. I need to cool down before I begin my grand escape.

{Book Blast + Giveaway} Dead in a Park (Leah Norwood Mystery #2) by B.L Blair

Can she find the killer before the killer strikes again?
Publication Date: November 12, 2015
Genre: Mystery, Romance
Series: Leah Norwood Mystery #2

When Leah Norwood finds the body of Donald Collins in the city park, she doesn’t know he is a distant relative. Young Donnie was a jewel thief and a career criminal. Hidden in the lining of his suit jacket was an exact replica of a ring that has been in Leah’s family for over a hundred years. After her home is burglarized, the sexy chief of police is convinced the ruby ring has something to do with the murder.

Leah wants to find out what happened to Donnie, but why would someone kill for a hundred year old ring? She discovers a connection between Donnie and the drug-dealing Cantono family, between the Cantono family and a jewelry appraiser, and between the jewelry appraiser and one of her own employees. Chief Griggs might be onto something. All clues lead back to the family ring.

Leah loves a good mystery. Can she find the killer before the killer strikes again?
