Waiting on Wednesday (34)

Welcome to Waiting on Wednesday! Waiting on Wednesday is a weekly event that is hosted by Jill at Breaking the Spine and spotlights upcoming releases we are eagerly anticipating. This week I am anxiously awaiting:

Tiger Lily by Jodi Lynn Anderson
Publication Date: July 3rd 2012
Genre: YA Fantasy
Pages: 292

Summary

Before Peter Pan belonged to Wendy, he belonged to the girl with the crow feather in her hair. . . .

Fifteen-year-old Tiger Lily doesn't believe in love stories or happy endings. Then she meets the alluring teenage Peter Pan in the forbidden woods of Neverland and immediately falls under his spell.

Peter is unlike anyone she's ever known. Impetuous and brave, he both scares and enthralls her. As the leader of the Lost Boys, the most fearsome of Neverland's inhabitants, Peter is an unthinkable match for Tiger Lily. Soon, she is risking everything--her family, her future--to be with him. When she is faced with marriage to a terrible man in her own tribe, she must choose between the life she's always known and running away to an uncertain future with Peter.

With enemies threatening to tear them apart, the lovers seem doomed. But it's the arrival of Wendy Darling, an English girl who's everything Tiger Lily is not, that leads Tiger Lily to discover that the most dangerous enemies can live inside even the most loyal and loving heart.

From the "New York Times" bestselling author of "Peaches" comes a magical and bewitching story of the romance between a fearless heroine and the boy who wouldn't grow up.

I've always loved Tiger Lily and now that she has her own novel, this girl here just can't wait to read it! :)

Becca took another step back, putting the cooking island between her and him, before realizing this felt very much like cat and mouse. "Stop it."
He stared back at her. "You're not going anywhere until you tell me the truth."
Gabriel pulled a cookie from the package and sat back in his chair. "My money's on the girl."

Thunder growled in the sky, and the grass gave way to mud, cluthcing her sneakers. Her knees hit the ground. Her hands squished into the dirt. She slipped and slid, struggling for purchase, but couldn't find her footing. Her fingers seemed to tangle in the grass, as if the roots grabbed her hands and held her down.

Will saw the muscles bunch in the massive hindquaters. He was too far from cover to run. He'd have to face the charge here in the open. He dropped to one knee and, hopelessly, held out the keenbladed Ranger knife in front of him as the boar charged.

Review: Divergent

Divergent by Veronica Roth
Publication Date: May 3, 2011
Genre: YA Dystopian
Pages: 487

Summary

In Beatrice Prior's dystopian Chicago, society is divided into five factions, each dedicated to the cultivation of a particular virtue—Candor (the honest), Abnegation (the selfless), Dauntless (the brave), Amity (the peaceful), and Erudite (the intelligent). On an appointed day of every year, all sixteen-year-olds must select the faction to which they will devote the rest of their lives. For Beatrice, the decision is between staying with her family and being who she really is—she can't have both. So she makes a choice that surprises everyone, including herself.

During the highly competitive initiation that follows, Beatrice renames herself Tris and struggles to determine who her friends really are—and where, exactly, a romance with a sometimes fascinating, sometimes infuriating boy fits into the life she's chosen. But Tris also has a secret, one she's kept hidden from everyone because she's been warned it can mean death. And as she discovers a growing conflict that threatens to unravel her seemingly perfect society, she also learns that her secret might help her save those she loves… or it might destroy her.

This book has a lot of hype surrounding it. And that makes me want to read it. But at the same time, you got the thought that the book is extremely awesome. That's it's going to be one of the best books you ever read. And if it's not, thenit really is disappointing.

But this book lives up to the hype.

Four turns the knife in his hand, his fingers moving painstakingly over the metal edge. He gives me such a hard look that I feel like he's turning me to stone.

The book starts kinda slow. You know, introducing you to the world. The world is a very dystopian world. Something bad happened, and people find a way to surrive. Though you never do find out what was the bad thing that caused the city to be split up like it is. That did slightly annoyied me, but otherwise the world was pretty cool.

The book picks up as they get into initiation, and you learn more about the main character, Tris. Which was good because I wasn't her biggest fan at the begining. She seemed kinda weak, whiny, and not someone who could be a main character. But as the book goes on, she gets tougher and more of a badass.

Four was another character that I really liked. He was like a mystery that slow unraveled as you read more. A few other initiates were cool to. Peter was a jerk. Christina was easily Tris best friend.

The plot was great. Pieces of the overall plot was given through out the book so you never know exactly what it is til you read the whole book. Which was cool because it made you want to get to the end. Made it tough to put it down. Honestly, I would pick it up to read a few minutes and I would end up reading a few hours.

The ending was really good. It ended with a slight cliff hanger. You really don't know what hapens to some of the characters, and that annoys me because I want to know. But it does set up well for a sequel. Which I'm going to get, by the way.

I totally recomend the book to anyone who likes dystopian, to people who like fun booksthat will hook you.

Summary

It’s the end of the world. Six students have taken cover in Cortege High but shelter is little comfort when the dead outside won’t stop pounding on the doors. One bite is all it takes to kill a person and bring them back as a monstrous version of their former self.

To Sloane Price, that doesn’t sound so bad. Six months ago, her world collapsed and since then, she’s failed to find a reason to keep going. Now seems like the perfect time to give up. As Sloane eagerly waits for the barricades to fall, she’s forced to witness the apocalypse through the eyes of five people who actually want to live.

But as the days crawl by, the motivations for survival change in startling ways and soon the group’s fate is determined less and less by what’s happening outside and more and more by the unpredictable and violent bids for life—and death—inside.

When everything is gone, what do you hold on to?

Now it's your turn....What are you waiting for?

Review: Watch the Skies

Watch the Skies (Daniel X #2) by James Patterson and Ned Rust
Publication Date: July 27,2009
Genre: YA Science Fiction
Pages: 239

Summary

LIGHTSAll is quiet in the small town of Holliswood. Television sets, computers, and portable devices are aglow in every home, classroom, and store. Yet not all is perfect. Evil is lurking, just out of sight, behind the screen.

CAMERAResiding in this sleepy town is a villain with more ambition than the world can withstand. Twisted beyond reason, he is dead set on throwing Holliswood into chaos and documenting the destruction of every person in it, including Daniel X.

EXTERMINATIONThe only person who can stop this made-for-TV tyrant, Daniel must use his extraordinary power to save the town. But this devilish director has assembled an all-star team of his own creation and vows to stage the most spectacular finale the world has ever seen. Can Daniel X stop this deranged outlaw--or will he find himself on the cutting room floor?

This is the fifth book of James Patterson's that I read. I liked the first two, 'The Dangerous Days of Daniel X' and 'Witch and Wizard'. But the last two, 'The Angel Experiment' and 'The Gift', were not good.  So, when I started this book, I was kinda hesitant to hope for to much.

I ran so fast I could hear napkins, empty Styrofoam cups, plastic spoons, and other litter getting sucked along in a vortex behind me.

Okay, so the this time Daniel is going after #5 and his crony #21, though neither of them have a name. I don't really have a opinion about these two. I really couldn't picture them and they never fully seemed , well, evil. I wish that they were more like the villain in the last book.

I liked Daniel a lot more in this book then in the last. Though I still liked his friends and family more then him. All the characters got a little more depth.

The plot was pretty good. It does feel a lot like the first, which is a good and bad thing. It's good because I liked the feel of the first book and it was nice that it continued in to this book. It's bad because I kinda wanted to feel like the series was developing, but it just kinda stays the same.

Another thing I wasn't the biggest fan of is the really short chapters. I mean really short, like two or three pages short. I mean that's fine with me every once in a while, but for a whole book it was kinda annoying. And just to give you the heads up, every one of James Patterson's books that I read had really short chapters.

Overall, I liked that book. It was a fun story and a fun read. But, it's one of those book where fun to read it once, but maybe not the second time. Will I read the next one? I don't know. The jury is still out on that. But I do recommend to fans of the first book to read this one.

Review: The Intruders

The Intruders (Visitors Trilogy #1) by Logan Rutherford
Publication Date: April 6th 2012
Genre: YA Science Fiction
Pages: 250
Goodreads

Summary

The White House has been engulfed by the shadow of a mysterious ship. Days go by, and the Visitors make no contact, until one day, they leave. Suddenly the Earth goes still. Billions of people disappear at once. There’s no trace as to where that vast population has gone.

Seventeen-year-old Charlie Freeman and his cousin Alex, are two of the few left behind. While fighting for survival they join a girl named Sarah on her journey to Washington D.C. to rescue her little brother. The path they walk is riddled with the horrors, and strange creatures. They must overcome great obstacles before ending their treacherous journey.

Omg, this was such an entertaining read for me and I thank Logan, the author, for sending me a copy. :)
This is an action packed novel that'll keep you on your toes.

In the beginning we get to see the normal life of trouble maker Charlie Freeman before the Visitor's come. We get to meet his parents and their daily lives , the father Principal of Charlie's high school and the mother an author. I just adore the mother when the Visitor's come, it's so funny!

However, the Visitor's come in no time. Hovering above The White House doing nothing Charlie and his families life turns upside down. His aunt and cousin come down from D.C just to get away but in the end there is no place safe for anyone.....anyone human that is.

The Visitor's were creepy to the t. Their look, the way they acted, and the way they become one with a human. It was creeptastic. Especially this one scene very far into the book. Let's just say it makes you think over the whole book and then it'll just blow your mind because of what really is going on. It's a favorite scene of mine and I still can't stop thinking about it.

But, besides the non-stop action and the very exciting plot line, I did have a little problem with this book. Editing and a little over description, oh and if there is only two people in the scene- say the main character and another- I don't need the other guys name repeated over again. For example, I don't need to see this a few times- Alex said. Just say he said instead cause I got it the first time.

Now the edits were either miss spelled words, sentences not making any sense or two words that needed to switch places in a line. And the over description, say the main character is walking to a pond, well I don't need to be told over and over again in the sentences to come after the first one telling me he's walking to a pond.

Though, it might seem this book as a lot of edit issues, it really doesn't. They're spread out in the book so it won't bug you too much. Plus with this great story being told you'll forget about them.

Overall, with these amazing charters, creepy aliens, and fun dialog you'll be hooked and day dreaming about the second one, The Enemy. Which I can not wait for it to come out. I want to know more about the characters, mainly Rae, I want to know what she's hiding. And I want to see where Logan takes this. Plus, I enjoyed this book so much more because it had me thinking about my own alien book and I loved it for that.

I most definitely recommend & thanks again Logan. :)

Review: TimeRiders

TimeRiders (TineRiders #1) by Alex Scarrow
Publication Date: January 2010
Genre: YA Science Fiction
Pages: 405

Summary

Liam O'Connor should have died at sea in 1912. Maddy Carter should have died on a plane in 2010. Sal Vikram should have died in a fire in 2026. Yet moments before death, someone mysteriously appeared and said, 'Take my hand ...'

But Liam, Maddy and Sal aren't rescued. They are recruited by an agency that no one knows exists, with only one purpose - to fix broken history. Because time travel is here, and there are those who would go back in time and change the past. That's why the TimeRiders exist: to protect us. To stop time travel from destroying the world...
The book was really good. I loved the plot and characters. But even a good book like this has it's flaws.

She noticed something in its face. Intelligence. Perhaps a long faded memory stirring behind those milky boiled-fish eyes. This thing was human, or at least it had once been human, she was sure of that.

In this world, in the year 2044 the first time machine was invented. The government eventually banned them for reasons that were explained, but would be hard to describe in the review. But, did that stop people from trying to invent them? Of course not. So this agency secretly made their own machines and set up teams, the TimeRiders, through out history to make sure no one would go back and changed it. Pretty much the police of time traveling.

So that's pretty much what the TimeRiders are. The team that are featured are stationed in 2001 New York, the Monday before and the Tuesday of 9/11. The team members are Foster, who is the team leader and trainer, Maddy, the leader-in-training and team analyst, Sal, the team observer, Liam, the operative, and Bob, the support unit. And Bob is pretty much a meat puppet with a computer brain.

You don't learn that much about any of them. There wasn't a lot of character development, which I didn't like. I wanted to know more about their lives back in their own time, especially Sal because she was from the year 2026. You see the moments before Liam and Maddy are supposed to die, but other then that you only get stuff like Sal had both her parents and Maddy was kinda a geek. Other than wanting them to be more developed, the characters were great. I liked their personalities, and they were characters i could get behind.

The bad guy was Paul Kramer, a scientist from 2066. He goes back in time to WWII to help the Germans to win. He does this because, in his mind, it would have been better. He is just crazy enough to try it and just sane enough to be able to do it. So, although he starts off having good intentions, he ends about blowing up a nuclear bomb.

The plot was great. There wasn't any point when I had no idea what was going on. Though there were a few times when I wasn't sure if they were in 1956 or 1957. The writing was pretty good, but I didn't always now who was talking.

All in all, I loved the book. I could get behind the characters. The plot was cool, and I couldn't help but wish I could time travel with them. But, who hasn't wanted to time travel at least once in their life. Anyway, I completely recommend the book and I can't wait to read the next one.

Review: Just One Wish

Just One Wish by Janette Rallison
Publication Date: March 5th 2009
Genre: YA Contemporary
Pages: 272
Goodreads

Summary

Seventeen-year-old Annika Truman knows about the power of positive thinking. With a little brother who has cancer, it's all she ever hears about. And in order to help Jeremy, she will go to the ends of the earth (or at least as far as Hollywood) to help him believe he can survive his upcoming surgery.

But Annika's plan to convince Jeremy that a magic genie will grant him any wish throws her a curveball when he unexpectedly wishes that his television idol would visit him. Annika suddenly finds herself in the desperate predicament of getting access to a hunky star actor and convincing him to come home with her. Piece of cake, right?

Janette Rallison's proven talent for laugh-out-loud humor, teen romance, and deep-hearted storytelling shines in a novel that will have readers laughing and crying at the same time.

I choose this book because I was hoping for a pick me up kind of book. And doesn't this plot sound like a good pick me up. I bet you guys can already feel the but coming, huh?

But it wasn't a majorly powerful pick me up kind of book. Yes, I had laughs even laugh out loud moments, but it didn't completely lift my spirits up. It was a nice little read but it didn't fill this certain craving.

Annika was a fun, strong willed character that was put through the ultimate test- her little 6 year old brother getting cancer. I loved everything she did just so she could make him happy. Starting with the opening scene. That's when you knew this book had some humor in it.

The stunts she did all just to get the guy whom plays Robin Hood in her brothers favorite TV show were fun. The snake, the nuns costume, and the trailer jumping.....yeah, actually jumping from one trailer roof to another, was so much fun to read. Laugh out loud moment right there!

However, I felt that in some areas were maybe a little rushed....just maybe. This plot takes place in only a couple to three days. So you know you're going from one silly stunt to the next. But when it came to the romance between Annika and Robin Hood (for god sake, I can't totally remember his name.) Anyways, I felt in some parts of the book she got to distracted by his good looks. Which is fine, being attracted to someone, but sometimes I felt she thought about that in some of the wrong times.

Overall, this was an okay book. Plus when I was reading this my life was going some what upside down, at that time, so that's probably why it wasn't as great as I thought it would be. This is a fun, light hearted read that can be read by anyone.

And if you loved any of Janette's previous works then I'm sure you'll love this one too!

Snow White by Brothers Grimm, Illustrator by Camille Rose Garcia
Publication Date: February 28, 2012
Genre: Fairy Tales
Pages: 80

Summary

“Mirror, mirror, on the wall,
Who’s the fairest one of all?”

Originating in seventeenth-century French folklore, the story of Snow White has long been one of the world’s most memorable childhood tales.

It is the story of an evil queen determined to do away with a girl—with skin as white as snow, lips as red as blood, and hair as black as ebony—who threatens the queen’s quest to remain the most beautiful in her kingdom. This new gift edition presents the unabridged version of the Grimms’ tale, with an original interpretation by renowned artist Camille Rose Garcia that artfully combines wit and dark romance.

We all know the story of Snow White. But I simply want this because of the amazing illustration. Though, of course I would read it too, haha ^_^

Right, right....Gorgeous!!!!!!!!!

Happy Reading Everybody!

Day of the Predator (TimeRiders #2) by Alex Scarrow
Publication Date: August 5, 2010
Genre: YA Science Fiction
Pages: 448

Summary

Liam O’Connor should have died at sea in 1912.
Maddy Carter should have died on a plane in 2010.
Sal Vikram should have died in a fire in 2029.

But all three have been given a second chance—to work for an agency that no-one knows exists. Its purpose—to prevent time travel destroying history . . .

When Maddy mistakenly opens a time window where and when she shouldn’t have, Liam is marooned sixty-five million years ago in the hunting ground of a deadly—and until now—undiscovered species of predator.

Can Liam make contact with Maddy and Sal before he’s torn to pieces by dinosaurs—and without endangering history so much that the world is overtaken by a terrifying new reality?

I know I am still reading the first one, but unless the ending really, and I mean really, sucks, I'm gonna want to read this one, too.
