~Summary~

Serena knows a few simple things. She will always be owned by a warlock. She will never have freedom. She will always do what her warlock wishes, regardless of how inane, frivolous, or cruel it is. And if she doesn’t follow the rules, she will be tarnished. Spelled to be bald, inked, and barren for the rest of her life—worth less than the shadow she casts.

Then her ownership is won by a barbarian from another country. With the uncertainty that comes from belonging to a new warlock, Serena questions if being tarnished is really worse than being owned by a barbarian, and tempts fate by breaking the rules. When he looks the other way instead of punishing her, she discovers a new world. The more she ventures into the forbidden, the more she learns of love and a freedom just out of reach. Serena longs for both. But in a society where women are only ever property, hoping for more could be deadly.

~My Thoughts~

*was provided to me by the author for my honest opinion*

I've been excited about this book ever since I revealed the cover and when I saw that Mrs. Falor placed it on Netgalley, I just had to have it! Once I got it, it didn't take me long for me to dive right in. Even with the forewarning of it being a slow paced read.
So, if you want an action packed fast read then this isn't your book. However if you want an amazing world building read, then this book is for you. Though, yes as the story goes farther and farther in you'll eventually want some action but I promise you'll get a boat load of it in the end ;).
I absolutely love this world and how it progressed. This world is utterly disgusting, yet so intriguing. Plus seeing how amazing Serena grows within the pages, it's so captivating. I can't wait for the sequel! The only thing I think I have a problem with is that we don't really know if this is in the future with a past theme or if this is a different universe from ours. Other than that, I quite enjoyed this book.
In this world, guys are in charge and the women are just there to obey their every demand, it's like the Victorian age but a bit more violent as the men in this world are warlocks. The women carry the magic in their blood but only men can us the magic, so in Serena's world having a boy means a better life. But throughout the book Serena learns that other places aren't as harsh as her world is. Like the ones that are supposedly savages, they're actually the good guys. A little cliché there but it’s what this world calls for.
I absolutely love Zane and I wished Serena would have seen him as good guy a lot sooner haha. But of course I understand why it took her forever, and I mean forever. It’s because of the way she was raised. In her world men are never gentle to their women which is why I'm so happy that Zane came into Serena's life.
Overall this is a roller coaster ride and one I can't wait to go on again. The premise will pull you in and the author's storytelling will keep you hooked. The unfolding of everyone’s story within will suck you in, you'll be turning page after page. You might even lose track of time, it's that amazing!
P.S the other problem was that sometimes I got lost on who was talking but again, not many problems for me.

Will disturb your being

Genre: New Adult Fantasy Romance
Pages: 288

~Summary~

“You don’t have to choose. You can be both. The girl with the charm, the girl without. They both suit you.”

Caris Harper lives a charmed life. Literally.

When her dad offers to take her to the Emerald coast of Florida for summer vacation, Caris jumps at the chance. The chance to get answers to questions she’s always been too afraid to ask. The chance to be normal. Isn’t that what her dreams have been telling her, that here in the place of her birth she can be normal? But from the first moment the wind caresses her face and the sun touches her skin, the charm begins to fade, revealing a girl Caris never knew existed, one that is anything but normal. The long-buried Song that awakens is only the beginning of a transformation that will challenge her ideas about loyalty and family.

Noah Jacobs is a waterbreather—a species of human fully adaptable to life in the water. Like his older brother Jamie, Noah wants to prove they can use their abilities and be heroes in service to their country. When a simple mission goes wrong and Jamie goes missing, Noah exiles himself to the Deep in a desperate search. MIA is a classification Noah is not ready to accept. But instinct can’t be ignored. Not when he hears her Song. Caris is not what he expects and Noah is determined to get her out of his head. Instead he finds himself acting as her mentor and the more time they spend together, the more Noah realizes he just wants Caris.

When a startling truth threatens their newly formed trust, Noah straddles the line between love and obsession while Caris struggles to find a balance between the girl she thought she was and the young woman she wants to be.

~Excerpt~

All my life I wanted to be like my mother, hoped I was like her. And now that I knew I was, the knowledge felt like a burden instead of a blessing. A dream turned nightmare.
As I stood on the beach, a few yards away from where the foamy waves rushed over the sand, I wished it weren’t true. Maybe my dad was wrong. Maybe my mother had been wrong.
My hope was dashed as soon as the Song came, easy and instinctive. Echoes built and swirled in my head like the breaking of so many waves. I felt the purpose of this Song in a way I hadn’t felt before. I recognized it for what it was now. What before had come as the result of wayward thought, produced by uncontrolled feelings, now came with a violent edge.
A command.
A part of me prayed he wouldn’t answer, that he wouldn’t succumb to the power even as it seemed to fill me with a sense of vitality.
Minutes later, Noah emerged from the surf, surrounded by the foamy break. He radiated power. Somewhere in the fog of my mind, I remembered his strong arms wrapped around me as he wrestled me from the force that held me to the bottom of the ocean. Was it because I knew what he was that I could see him so clearly, or was it that he no longer had to hide that part of himself from me? Did we all wear a charm of some sort? All I knew for sure was that no mere human had eyes like that. No mere human moved with such graceful strength as though he commanded the water itself.
Our eyes locked and held. We circled each other with wary steps. This wasn’t the same boy I’d rescued from a pack of bullies. This boy was wild, defiant and snarling silently, caught in this invisible trap of my Song.
Where did we stand? Yesterday I would have said we were friends. Now I didn’t know. He stopped an arms length away. Was he afraid to come closer? No wonder he had looked at me with such animosity before. He didn’t like it, having to come when I called. But despite that, despite what my dad had told me about my real father hurting my mother, I couldn’t believe that Noah would hurt me. I told him that day he’d rescued me from a pool of horseshoe crabs that he wouldn’t hurt me and I still believed that. Maybe even more now.
“Are you afraid of me now?” I would be lying if I said I didn’t feel a sense of empowerment, a tiny thrill that he was here only because I’d asked him to come with just a thought.
“No.” As if to prove it, he closed the space between us with one long stride, eyes intent, bold as they raked over me. I had discarded my dad’s t-shirt, eager to feel the wind on my skin, the spray from the surf. I wore my bikini top and bottoms, but I might as well have been naked the way Noah looked at me. Noah’s bare chest glistened with moisture and I had the absurd thought to rub up against him, let that moisture soak into my skin. Something must have shone on my face, some yearning I couldn’t name, because he shook his head and tiny drops of water rained down on me. I massaged them into my arms, let them drip down my face, craving more. They sang through my blood and every nerve ending in my body responded. Even my scalp tingled.
His eyes scoured my face, questions swimming in the green depths. But he also looked as if he too had no idea what happened next.
“How long have you known?” I couldn’t quite keep the edge out of my voice. The accusation. I knew this wasn’t his fault. The fault lie with my dad, but still, he had been keeping this from me. He should have told me.
“Since the first day I saw you.”
“The day behind the shops when Jax took your hair?” How had they done it? Cornered and trapped him like that? It didn’t seem possible, even though there had been three of them.
“No.” He averted his eyes. I watched his throat move as he swallowed. “Before that.”
Realization dawned. My first night here, when the water grabbed at me. I remembered the swell I’d felt in my chest, the Song that had burst through my head almost without me knowing.
I called him that first day, and he’d come, not knowing who I was. I didn’t want that kind of power over him. Yet, here he stood.
“Why you? I mean, there are others like you…” I gulped, still barely able to grasp the idea of another species, even with the proof of it standing in front of me. The proof of it humming under my skin. I still felt human enough, but Noah was definitely more. So unquestioningly, obviously more. “Like us. Why you?”
“I don’t know.” He said the words almost like a tired sigh, as though it was an unanswered question he’d asked himself over and over.
“So, we’re not really friends. It’s just this…” I waved my hand between us, not knowing what to call this connection we shared.
“I can’t speak for you, but I am your friend, Caris. I will always be that.”
My throat tightened and I looked away, not wanting him to see how his words affected me. They soothed the raw edge of my raging emotions. Grounded me to center when everything felt like it was spiraling out of my control. “You must hate me.”
His mouth quirked in a half smile. “No. I don’t hate you.”

Review: Wake

Wake (Dream Catcher #1) by Lisa McMann
Publication Date: March 4, 2008
Genre: YA Fantasy
Pages: 210

Summary

For seventeen-year-old Janie, getting sucked into other people's dreams is getting old. Especially the falling dreams, the naked-but-nobody-notices dreams, and the sex-crazed dreams. Janie's seen enough fantasy booty to last her a lifetime.
She can't tell anybody about what she does they'd never believe her, or worse, they'd think she's a freak. So Janie lives on the fringe, cursed with an ability she doesn't want and can’t control.
Then she falls into a gruesome nightmare, one that chills her to the bone. For the first time, Janie is more than a witness to someone else's twisted psyche. She is a participant.

I will make this clear. You are either going to like this book or you're not. I am one that didn't. The concept and the blurb on the back made me want to read it. But those are two of the best things about this book.

The plot is weak. It took me awhile to even figure out what it was. A lot of useless detail was there. And the ending was forced. The romance felt the same way most of the time. And the writing was choppy and it really hurt the flow.

And the characters weren't developed. Janie and Cabel just feel like messes for most of the book. The only character I kind of liked was Janie's friend, Carrie. But even she was not amazing. Janie's mother was a drunk and the only adult that even seemed to care about any of the teenagers was the captain.

Okay, so I'm not a fan of the book. And I could probably rant about it for awhile. But it was a quick read. Which was a saving grace as I doubt I would've finished it otherwise. I think in a different person's hands this book could've been a lot better. But as it is, I just can't even recommend it.

{Blog Tour: Excerpt + Interview + Giveaway} Not Pretty Enough by Jaimie Admans

Not Pretty Enough

Not Pretty Enough by Jaimie Admans
Publication Date: August 1, 2013
Genre: YA Comedy Contemporary
Pages: 191

~Summary~

“New Year’s Resolutions:
1. Lloyd Layton will know I exist. He once said three whole words to me, so this is obviously progress. If I don’t get a proper conversation out of him soon, then I’ll take my top off and streak through the cafeteria, because nobody could fail to notice these boobs.
2. I will not get expelled for streaking through the cafeteria.”

Those are the words that begin her mission.
Chessie is fourteen, not pretty enough, and very much in love. Lloyd Layton is hot, popular, and unaware of Chessie’s existence.
Her goal is clear: to get Lloyd to love her as much as she loves him, and she has exactly one year to do it.
As Chessie’s obsession with Lloyd reaches boiling point and she starts to spin a web of lies that spiral out of control, Lloyd turns out to be not quite the prince she thought he was. Can Chessie avoid the gathering storm before things go too far?

~Excerpt~

I stare at the back of Lloyd’s shaggy brown hair as I follow him across the yard. He doesn’t know I’m following him, of course. I’m not even following him, not really. Not this time, anyway. Debs and I are just casually strolling across the yard towards the buses and he happens to be in front of us.

“Chessie!” Debs shouts at me just a second too late as I walk smack bang into the side of a bus.

Ouch.

Lloyd turns around at the sound of the clattering thunk I make.

Usually I like the sound of Lloyd’s laugh, but not today. Not when he’s laughing at me.

“You couldn’t have told me just a second earlier?” I ask Debs.

“Sorry,” she says. “I was talking to you and didn’t realise you weren’t listening until it was too late.”

Luckily the bus I’ve just walked into happens to be our bus, and I throw myself onto it with such force that I nearly come out the other side.

“You all right, love?” The driver asks. I ignore him and heave myself down into my seat with a huff.

I am all right. My boobs are so large they hit the bus before the rest of me did, otherwise I’d probably have a bruised face as well as the bruised ego. Once, just once, couldn’t these things happen to me when Lloyd isn’t watching? It’s not too much to ask, is it?

“Maybe if you spent more time watching where you were going and less time watching Lloyd, these things wouldn’t happen in front of him,” Debs says.

I hadn’t meant to say that out loud.

“But he’s just so… watchable.”

“I’m pretty sure he’s talkable to as well, you know, if you tried.”

The thing is, I have tried. Lloyd brings out the worst in me. He brings out the most nervous, clumsiest, downright embarrassing side of me that doesn’t even exist unless he’s in the immediate vicinity. Well, maybe it exists but it doesn’t show half as much if Lloyd’s not there.

Jaimie is a 28-year-old English-sounding Welsh girl with an awkward-to-spell name. She lives in South Wales and enjoys writing, gardening, drinking tea and watching horror movies. She hates spiders and cheese & onion crisps. She has been writing for years but has never before plucked up the courage to tell people. Afterlife Academy is her third novel and she hopes you enjoy it. There are plenty more on the way!

~Interview~

1.       In Twitter style (140 characters), please describe Not Pretty Enough?

A romantic comedy: Chessie is desperately trying to get the boy she loves to realise she exists, but just how far will she go to get Lloyd to love her back?

2.       What interested you in writing Young Adult?

I love the genre. I absolutely love reading YA and I always wanted to try writing it, it was just a case of waiting for the right plot idea to come along!

3.       Which do you like writing better, Contemporary or Paranormal?

It’s hard to choose, although I think Paranormal just wins it because you’re almost unlimited in what you can write about. With Contemporary, you have to fit within the bounds of the normal world, but with Paranormal, you can invent anything and it will fit in if you’ve world-built well enough!

4.       What inspired you to write Not Pretty Enough?

I just thought it was something that most people would have been through. It’s certainly something that I went through when I was a teenager – being madly in love with a boy who doesn’t even know your name – I thought people would relate to it, and I thought it would make a funny novel as the main character gets more and more desperate for this boy to notice her.

5.       What made you to decide to Self-Publish?

I liked the idea of being in control of my own work, for one thing. For another was the time traditional publishing takes – I didn’t want to wait years, I didn’t want to spend months getting rejections, waiting months for responses, and eventually waiting years for a book to appear on the shelf. Self-publishing felt right, I’m a big believer in gut instincts, and it truly felt like the right time to do it myself.

6.       What is your favorite thing about Not Pretty Enough?

It was really fun to write! Every scene was pretty much a case of sitting there thinking, “what’s the worst, most embarrassing thing that could happen at this particular moment?” I tortured Chessie quite a lot, and I really enjoyed it!

7.       We all listen to music, what were the songs that helped you write Not Pretty Enough?

Not Pretty Enough by Kasey Chambers! You can see where it gets the name from! I don’t listen to music while I’m writing or I end up singing along instead of working! But each book has, I suppose you would call it a theme song – one or two songs that are stuck in my head while I’m writing and help evoke the atmosphere of the book, and Not Pretty Enough definitely did that!

8.       I see there will be a book two, how was it writing a series compared to writing your standalones?

To be honest, it wasn’t much different! Both books work completely as standalones, so although there are the same characters who are a bit older and wiser, there are also new characters and new conflicts. As the writer, the only difference that I really felt was how well I knew the characters – it was like going back to old friends rather than getting to know new friends!

9.       While reading Afterlife Academy I saw some slang words I never heard here in the states, mind telling us some fun ones we might see in your books?

Ha ha, my editor is always having a laugh at my British-isms! The thing is, I don’t really know which words you wouldn’t have heard over there, I use them in everyday life so it’s second nature to me! Let’s see… “Snogging” which is kissing, of course, and “getting a bollocking” is being told off for something. I changed one of the insults I use all the time due to it having a completely different meaning over there. “Chuffed” (really pleased!) “Crikey” (surprise!) “knackered” (really tired!)
Bloody hell and sodding or sod off are my favourite swear-ish type words! You probably know most of those, but I think they’re British words that appear in my writing quite often!

10.   Lastly, mind sharing six random facts about you?

- I love horror movies. The scarier, the better. I like a film that has me hiding behind the duvet and sleeping with the lights on.
- I’m addicted to tea. I can’t start the day without a cup of tea, and don’t really function unless I’ve had one!
- I’m also addicted to bad reality TV and talent shows!
- I have a massive crush on Aaron Tveit who played Enjolras in the Les Miserables movie last year!
- I love scented candles and perfume, and buy far too much of both!
- There’s a giant wooden ampersand sign on the wall above my computer!

I had fun asking those questions and I hope you enjoyed them too, Jaimie. Also, reading through those excerpts it was extremely hard to choose which one to put up because they were all just so good! I seriously can’t wait to read this one day! J

~My Thoughts~

I know novellas are short and fast paced but I wish the relationships in them could truly develop and not feel like “lust at first” sight cause that's what they feel like to me in all the New Adult novellas. I think this and two other things were the only problems I had with this short, the rest was enjoyable. It's light and fun with the mixing of mythology. Mixing vampires and Greek gods was a blast and I can totally see it, most definitely an original idea. Now if only this tale was longer so things could develop more gracefully.
The second problem I had was the voice of the main character, Toni (Antonia). Sometimes she sounded mature and other times she didn't. When she didn't sound mature it always felt like it was at the wrong times, like when she's at work. She's a Dr. and sometimes at the work place I didn't feel like she was always professional. Which had me wondering what her age was?
One unprofessional thing she did that bugged me is when she cried for a patient of hers, that died, in the break room around her coworkers. Now I'm not insensitive but I know how professional they have to be, and they can't ever be like that in front of people. Plus, the author wrote that it isn't her first patient to die (also this patient, she met her a few hours before she past so it’s not like she really knew her). So this got me thinking again, does she burst into tears every time one of them past? If so, then how does she stay in work if it always gets to her? Look, I've been around nurses my whole life so I know they have to hide their emotions so they can get the job done. If they don't hide them, then they can freeze and lose a patient. So that scene just got to me.
Another thing I didn't like was the rush of the ending. It came fast and I wished it didn't, especially since it held a lot of twists. Which led me to feel like those twist couldn't truly develop properly.
But other than those things, I did enjoy it. I was able to get hooked and fall into the storyline. I'm very interested to see what happens next so I will most definitely continue this series. P.S it’s free on Amazon so if this peeks your interest then I most definitely recommend you downloading it.

Gives you a good haunting

So, to say the least I'm excited to say I got not just 31 bloggers in two in a half days but I've gotten 34 bloggers!

Woohoo!

Yeah, I'm excited and so grateful!

My first personal thank you goes out to Diantha Jones for posting her rant about unprofessionalism. If it wasn't for that post I may have never had the courage to write my own and this blog tour may not have done as well or might not ever have happened. So, thank you girl for helping me out!

Next goes to Jaimie Admans for making such an awesome Blog Tour Banner! She was so generous and I'm so grateful that she took time out of her day to do it for me. Thank you so much, I truly love it!

Third thank you goes to Jovon @ Book2Buzz for constantly tweeting about the sign ups for my blog tour. And I mean constantly! haha. That means so much to me and it always put a smile on my face every time I got a notification about her tweeting. That was so sweet of you, thank you!

Another on goes out to Kristin @ Better Read Than Dead for emailing me an apology even though you shouldn't have to apologize for Catie's wrong doings. But nonetheless, I truly appreciate it. So thank you for going out of your way to right all of Catie's wrongs and I really hope she doesn't hurt your name.

Then I want to thank the people I contacted and they all jumped at the gun, offering all the help they could offer. Even the ones that don't normally do blog tours, thank you E. Van Lowe. I felt like I was bothering all you guys yet you were there to help and I'm so grateful for you guys showing your support towards me. Thank you with a big bear hug!!

All 34 of you guys helped show me how truly great this community is and it just makes my heart beat a little bit faster. It shows me that I'm at the right place and that I feel like I truly belong. So thank you guys for making me feel this way. Also, thank you to all those that signed up for the blog tour in the first place and coming back to help out with this one. It all means a lot! :)

I love you guys and I'm sure by now you're all pretty tired of hearing this.....well, reading this but Thank You!!

Again thank you and thank you to all those that offered more than just wanting to sign, for going one step farther. If I need help I will most definitely go to you guys!

So, I have to say now is.....Let's have a rocking tour!

I'll be sending out the special request of Interviews, Guest Post, and Top Five Facts out during this week. I want you all to have them before the tour begins so this can go as smoothly as possible :)

So, Thanks again and see you guys soon!

The magical world of Watersong is about to change forever. The answers Gemma and her friends have been searching for are finally revealed - but evil is closing in and time is running out....

Gemma and Harper Fisher are facing the fight of their lives. Gemma has been cursed with extraordinary powers that have a terrifying dark side, but she's finally found what she needs - a way to break the curse and become human again. However, finding the means to do it will be her greatest challenge yet. And now Penn, Lexi, and Thea - the gorgeous but deadly creatures who cursed her - are determined to kill her before she has a chance. Making matters worse, Penn has her sights set on Daniel - the guy Harper loves - and Penn always gets what she wants.

As Gemma and Harper race to break the curse before it's too late, they're thrust deeper into a mythical world of immortal secrets. They must into their enemies' past to find the answers they need, even if it means being drawn deeper into their savagely beautiful world. But one of the girls is not what she seems...and Gemma finds an unlikely ally as she struggles to save herself. Will it be enough to break an ancient curse that no one has ever escaped from alive?

~My Thoughts~

I absolutely love this series, I really do. However this one seemed a little boring at times. Which is why I'm so torn because I love this series. But this being the third book I was hoping for a little more.....okay, a lot more.
Though that being said, things did move along and I don't know why but I'm surprised on where things are going. They're going in the right direction and I can't wait to read the last and final book. I'm seriously wondering how things are going to end!
There's just so much emotion in this book, not only for the characters but for the readers. Which is why I love this series and why I feel like it's always so hard to write reviews for these books because there's just so much going on! The break ups, the romance, the fighting to survive, the going behind each other’s back, and there's just so much drama. And we all know who starts the drama, the bitch name Penn. Ugh, she’s so evil in this book! >_< Seriously, Gemma needs to kick her ass in the final book. Or Harper, ooh I would love to see that.
In this book we get to see how Gemma lives life with her new found power. For the first time she's finally living out in the real world while being a siren and with her uncontrolled powers. This can get her into some sticky situations if she isn't careful enough. I feel bad for her, every time she tries to do good with her powers they always go wrong and she hurts the one she loves. Ugh, I want Alex back. He's going through lots of changes thanks to Gemma trying to help with her powers. God, this story is just so heartbreaking.
Though Alex isn't the only male that's struggling, Daniel is too thanks to the evil queen. Can someone cut Penn's head off next? She's putting Daniel into a situation that he doesn't deserve to be in but I understand his side, I mean he's all about protecting his love Harper. *sigh* This couple is so adorable and swoon worthy. And they finally got a little steamy towards the end, I was so happy! Especially since it was so romantic!
Along with the main guys we get to see behind the eyes of the sirens this time. We get to dive deeper into their history and deeper into the mythology, I was so excited. We also get to see firsthand on how truly evil Penn can be. She'll turn on anyone, including blood. Thea's the only sane siren and you can't help but feel bad for her. I'm so proud of her at the end of the book!
Overall there's just so much drama, it'll consume you! The writing is beautiful, it'll sweep you right out of reality and into the lives of these amazingly well developed characters. And the last 50 or so pages, oh my god, I just couldn't breathe. I was sitting on the edge of my seat and getting chills from the depth of the details. When Lexi dragged her claw along the door, it made me cringe and think of nails being dragged on a chalkboard. Let's just say Amanda knows how to write a spine chilling atmosphere. Seriously, go pick up this book and lock yourself up because you won't want to leave this world, especially once you finally learn how to kill an evil siren.
